View Full Version : Annoying message: "Updating file system . . ."
rogerxnz 18-05-2002, 07:56 AM When using FileManager, I get this message every few seconds "Updating file system . . .". I cannot select anything until the message goes but usually the message reappears within seconds.
I have a 128MB card and it is about two-thirds full. I have v4.13 of the OS and I'm running Task Manager in the background.
Is this irritating message normal? Would it go if I switched off Task Manager? How do I switch off Task Manager?
Roger
whiplash 18-05-2002, 09:20 AM hi, it's because you have lots of data on your mmc and the system always takes time to "refresh" (update) your file structure.

TANKERx 18-05-2002, 11:32 AM Do you have anything running in the background writing to a file?
This 'Updating Filesystem' happens whenever the system detects a write to the 'disk' and updates the file system.
rogerxnz 18-05-2002, 11:39 AM Thanks for your replies.
The only program running in the background is Task Manager. I would like to try File Manger with Task Manager turned off but I can't find a way to turn it off!
Any clues would be appreciated.
Roger
its not task manger creating the delay..leave task manager running..its about the most useful prog you can have on your 9210...without it you'd be having to remove the battery quite often to reboot..
Nosferatu 18-05-2002, 05:40 PM My guess would be the 128 MMC...
Maybe its too HUGE to be handle by our communicator???
Any comments by other 128 mmc users???
yousif 19-05-2002, 05:58 AM I found those messages annoying too. It can get much worse when the folder you're working on is too large (too many items). The solution is to break your folders into sub-folders that do not contain more than 50-80 items (ringtones for example). If the folder contains more than 120-150 then it becomes a real problem.

Where did you get your 128MB MMc card from I'm sick to death of the Nokia 64MB ones I have, I would love to have a 128mb one asap!
All I get that message as well all the time.

This might be old news to some, if it is I apologize.
I found out that if I installed a file viewer say "Viewer1.sis" from Nokia's download site, I would get a lot of "Updating file system..." messages especially in a directory with lots of pictures and .rims on the D drive. I noticed that viewer1.sis default install to C drive, which takes up precious memory.
After uninstalling the viewer1.sis, the above message stops and the filemanager refreshes quickly.
Now anybody knows how to force install those viewerX.sis to D drive?
Cheers,
Ferric
One thing that you might want to check is that in "File Manager" you have the option to view the System Fodler turned off. The system folder has a lot of small files in it that are constantly changing to help mamange the system. (For example it holds the Email and SMS store, and the Contacts database).
If you're not scanning this folder, it should be a lot quicker.
The Psion Series 3a had an option to turn of the system updates unless you held down the "System" key... perhaps the Symbian peeps lurking here might want to consider this option for the next firmware build?

Thanks for the reply Ewan, tried your suggestion - refreshes better but still takes too long. Thx anyway.
Any idea(s) whether I can forced install the viewers in the D drive (wishful thinking)?
Thanks
Ferric
By the way, great software from FreEPOC thanks to you folks over there - I have FreeCrypt install and works great.

Fe3+,
Firstly thanks for the FreEPOC comment, we do our best for what is a glorified hobby site -you don't need to spend hundreds of pounds on C++ dev kits and invest the amounts of time some apps need.
As to a forced install, there is no direct way (as the SIS installation can specify a 'force copy to this drive' but there is nothing to stop you copying and c:/system/apps folder or other info onto the D drive.
Just back up first, okay!
Thanks for the tip.
Peace - Ferric
Just as a point of interest, are there any third party file managers for the 9210 that look like Norton Commander or XTreeGold?
