Although this has been discussed in about 100 threads throughout the forum, i can't seem to collate the information into something useful.

I'm really confused when it comes to movies/videos. What format films can i play? What do i play them in? How do i convert things to appropriate formats?

As an example of my stupidity, i thought the phone could play mp4's, so i found one, downloaded it, stuck it on the phone, then tried to play it in real player, which told me "Unable to play clip". What am i supposed to play mp4's in if not realone? The file doesn't appear in Video Recorder.

Any advice to clear things up would be great

Try converting a video in to .rm format that will work fine on the phone
the software I use to convert videos in to rm format is RealProducer8..
try that software and videos will be working perfectly on your phone ;)

or you can download the nokia multimedia converter from the nokia forum website http://www.nokia3650.net/forum/
I think it should be able to do mp4s if you have a recent version of quicktime installed but I cannot verify that.
