View Full Version : the "presence" feature on the 7610
ok...ive been on the phone to o2 to try and get the server address for this, but , as i suspected, they don't have a clue...what a surprise...customer support my a@!e ! .. any how, has anybody got it up and running yet?...as well as the "chat" feature? could somebody post the server settings etc, or , if needs be, where i can register for this...thanks .jay.
o2 (or any operator that wants their customers to use the Presence feature in newer Nokia handsets) needs to install a Wireless Village (WV) compatible presence server. See, e.g., this for more about WV:
http://www.openmobilealliance.org/tech/affiliates/wv/wvindex.html
o2 could, for example, buy the Nokia Presence Server:

It is www.yamigo.com
Should work independently from the operator, via GPRS.

same here, on o2, set it up and connected fine..but now what? how do i "see" and "chat" to people?
You need to have other people you know also on the same Presence server.
You can add Presence/Chat contacts in the Contacts app: open Contacts, hit the directional key right to see the Presence contacts view/list (by default it says "(no subscribed contacts)"), then hit "Options" and choose "Subscribe new" & proceed from there.

if yes then someone please tell me abt it.
A Presence server keeps track of your and your friends status (available, busy & such) & allows instant messaging type of chatting, too. Pretty much the same as PC-based instant messaging, but implemented for mobile phones and mobile network based service implementation.
If you're interested in nitty-gritty details, go to:

These OMA specs were also known as "Wireless Village" in the past.
zainman 09-10-2004, 10:10 PM okay, i signed up on yamigo, and can connect to the chat and presence servers correctly. but yeah i dont get how to use this, i thought this would be like agile, cuz when filling the form at yamigo i gave my ids for yahoo and msn and also the passwords, i thought this was just a gateway for the two instant messaging services. who is using presence and chat effectively? i dont get it.. and also positioning.. i no it is used to tell the service provider the location of the phone but that can be done on any phone, i mean i just have to call my operator and ask him where i am and he'll tell me. whats different about positioning? also, is there any site from which i can send requests to my phone for positioning? i mean from the internet can i find out where my phone is if i send a positiong request and the phone accepts it?
Guest 6600 19-10-2004, 02:31 PM Since it is based on GPRS, is it possible to have it on my nokia 6600? i mean through a downloadable software or similar stuff?
