View Full Version : *#62209526# (*#MAC WLAN#) displays wrong MAC!
superleccy 20-05-2006, 04:32 PM Hi there
*#62209526# told me that my MAC address is 00:01:6b:c7:ba:55. So, I spent several hours trying to get my N80 to talk to my home Wireless Network, which is access-protected by MAC address. It didn't work.
Eventually, I removeed the MAC address protection, and the N80 connected no problem. Then, using a host monitor tool, I could see that the MAC address of the N80 is actually 00:16:bc:7b:a5:0e, which is an anagram of the one reported by *#62209526#.
OK, so it's not actually a problem for me now I know what's going on, but I am curious to know if anyone else has noticed this problem. Also, my experience may help others.
Cheers
SL
Edit: There is a typo in the above post... please see post 5 in this thread.
Thanks for the report on this superleccy - much appreciated.
Thats bizarre, mine reports it fine. Whats your firmware version?!
Its wierd, seems to be shifted left a letter, with the last 5 replaced with 0E....
00016bc7ba55 <Wrong
_0016bc7ba50e < Correct
Mine definatly reports fine as I am using mac protected wifi aswell.
livfc 22-05-2006, 09:41 PM I had the same problem with mine, except the penultimapte pair was incorrect.
FW 3.0614.0.3
11-04-06
RM-92
Nokia N80 (31.02)
I've also found that the range on the wlan is not up to scratch compared to my laptop I cant seem to get a signal in my lounge which from the back room unless I am in an almost direct line of sight. A bit disappointed with that but the blackberry-style Active Sync solution is just great! All I need now is to get the "open emails" bug sorted and i'll be delighted!

superleccy 22-05-2006, 09:48 PM Thats bizarre, mine reports it fine. Whats your firmware version?!
I presume one of these numbers is the Firmware version:
V 3.0614.0.3
11-04-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (42.02)
Its wierd, seems to be shifted left a letter, with the last 5 replaced with 0E....
00016bc7ba55 <Wrong
_0016bc7ba50e < Correct
Sorry, typo in my original post. Actually it's...
00016bc7ba5e <Wrong
_0016bc7ba50e < Correct
So yes, it just one '0' that's in the wrong place. It is an anagram after all.
chrsfrwll 23-05-2006, 01:15 PM Interesting, but my N80 reported the MAC just fine, and I connected to my home network (also MAC protected) without a hitch.
rothmanns 23-05-2006, 02:52 PM mine also reports just fine.....using mac protection also
3.0614.0.3
11-04-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (12)
alfa145 18-06-2006, 07:47 PM Mine also reports the wrong mac:
00016bc7c49a <-- reported
0016bc7c490a <-- actual
It's an anagrom, shifting right for most characters. Weird bug, if it's a bug and not deliberate. It has the same layout as superleccy's. Not a problem for me, but could be for other less technical users.
I'm surprised nokia don't include the mac printed on a bit of paper with the phone - would help avoid confusion!
cah1982 19-06-2006, 06:54 PM yer mines same
router 00:16:BC:7E:55:07
phone 00:01:6B:C7:E5:57
its like the first number should be second to last
adam.hopkinson 22-07-2006, 12:28 AM I'd been having trouble getting my N80 on my mac address protected wireless since getting it last week - as had a friend - and then we found this thread. Can't tell you what firmware version i'm on (not up to speed with the phone yet!) but i've made a tool to correct incorrect mac addresses.
It's obviously fairly easy to bit-shift that extra character from the left to the penultimate position, but my thinking is that if i can get a few links to the tool, it should save people some time in the future. Thanks for all your help finding and fixing.
Anyway, click here to fix your N80 mac address! (http://adamhopkinson.co.uk/tools/s60mac/)
kontraband 26-10-2006, 09:05 PM Thats a nice help page Adam.
I thought it might have been my problem that wasnt allowing me to connect my N80 to my network but it was more the fact Ive been on call looking at PC screens for what feels like the last 48hrs and I just didnt click apply to add my N80 MAC addr in! :banghead: D'oh.
The MAC addr was correctly reported by the N80
elaverick 27-10-2006, 12:02 AM While I can appriciate the frustriation it's worth knowing that MAC filtering is one of the least secure methods of WLAN authentication available. MAC spoofing is amazingly easy (my laptop WLAN driver supports it simply to save hassle). A good WPA or WPA2 policy is a far more secure system.
Just FYI my V 4.0623.0.42 Vodaphone N80 reports a correct WLAN MAC address, I obtained my Firmware via FOTA.

Agreed. I use MAC filtering, WPA2 and hidden SSID. But to be honest the only one of those three that's only really making my network secure is WPA2.

FOTA = Firmware Over The Air? How did you get that? Which country are you in?
