After about 5 days of use with the N73, I've run into a rather annoying little issue that I would like to see if anyone else is also experiencing. The N73 is a great phone for the current market and I really can't complain about much as it was a gift from my girlfriend. I see it becoming perfect with the right firmware updates in the future.

Here is issue that I've run into:

The phone doesn't seem to handle software closing (for ram purposes) very well much like the older firmware N80's (and other S60 3E phones). With Best Taskman Trial Software, It is apparent that when certain applets on the phone(such as contacts, call logs, etc) are accessed and then "exited" the phone doesn't actually close these applets and thus they continue to exist in ram... gradually building up usage. It's possible the phone will shut these applets down after a while of idling(untested yet) but somewhere something goes wrong.

The phone will close unused applets when more ram is required for more intensive tasks like realplayer/camera/gallery but it seems the supposedly freed ram will just disappear! On reboot the phone has about 20mb free (with taskman running). The result is that eventually the phone will require a reboot or ram intensive functions will not function properly anymore: eg. the zoom in function when viewing pictures in the gallery. A simple error message will appear asking you to free up more memory by closing applications (even though pressing and holding down the menu button will show you only the standby process, meaning no other applet is being used)

I haven't run into any other issues at this time.

Zooming problem is apparently a firmware bug.

I have been deliberately using as many applets as I can on the cell phone to see exactly which one is causing the most problems. It seems now that my phone is stablized at 16.32mb of ram. I'm not sure what I did the past couple of days to make the phone run out of ram... but I will keep you all posted.

I have found that the phone is particularly bad at closing the Camera and Gallery applications. It is these two which eat up the RAM on my phone.

On startup, I have about 19MB free RAM, after a day or so in use (having opened Gallery and Camera) I'm down to about 12MB RAM, which is when I get problems zooming. If I kill Gallery and Camera using Taskman, then RAM goes back up to about 16MB.

Firmware version is: V2.0628.0.0.1

Reception in Visual Radio is also pretty poor. This is likely to be the same firmware issue as the N70 had originally.

Hi all. Just bought the n73. Installed themes and worked perfectly. Until i tred to remove them. I installed the themes using the Mcard. and when i loaded the themes, there was the mcard icon at the side confirming it. and so when i changed to a new mcard(1gig) and tried to install the themes. the phone just told me it was unable to install them. However when i selected different themes, they installed just fine. I restored factory settings to the phone and formated the Mcards (both of them) and tried to install the initial themes using the 1gig Mcard but it still wouldnt work.

I'm thinking that the phone cant overwrite themes and it saves an image of the theme in the phone registry or something. I cant find out how to erase that image. if there's such a thing.

Anyone with the experience or expertise, i would greatly appreciate ur help/advice. =)

It seems like the ram problem is something people with the first firmware are experiencing. My problem is the same... Certain applets just don't close very well once opened. At the moment I have to manually close apps with Taskman as well...

You could try the last resort FORMAT of the phone's memory *#7370#

Be warned this will clear all youe contacts, calnedar entries, connection settings, etc., so make sure you have backed them up. The Mcard contents will NOT be affected.

It is apparent that the usual Green + 3 + * reset combination does not work with the N73. It seems the only options we have are the two numerical format methods which I am unsure what the differences are:

*#7370#
*#7780#

For all I know, they both do the same thing and require the same confirmation code of 12345 but I've been reading about how a hard reset is still better than those two options. Good luck with this and keep us posted on the results. I'm reluctant to install themes at the moment. BTW, thanks for the sticky :icon14:

Off Topic: I got a screen protector today made for the N73 for 200NT (roughly $4.50USD) and it fits flawlessly. Sticking it on is quite tricky to perfect (as the tech at the shop failed 3 times before he got it right... oh well, their loss). The screen must be completely dust/fingerprint/oil free and you must not touch the buttom of the protective film or else a fingerprint is pretty much permanently stuck on the adhesive. It's well worth the money though, I'm not afraid of scratching the screen anymore. They also sell a shell that surrounds the whole phone with cut-outs at the keypad and the rear for the camera slider... but I found that overkill.

use SPLASH PHOTO that solves the zoom memory full problem (N80 did the same)

Hi all,

I'm a newbie to this sort of forum, but desperate for advice :con?

Very excited to get my new N73 in the post the other day, and hurriedly ordered my Sandisk 2GB MiniSD card for it as I'm off on weekend to Iceland soon & will be taking TONS of pics with the fab new 3.2mp camera. Trouble is, the phone can't make it's mind up whether it can see the MiniSD card or not.

First of all it says no memory card inserted, then I take it out and try again 3 times until it does find it. So I try formatting it, and it likes that, so I rename it. Then later on I try to move some pictures and it says no memory card inserted again. Again I take it out and put it back a few times and it recognises it. Then when I try to take pictures it says there's no card so it's going to use the phone memory :frown:

I've tried the card connected to my PC with the adapter and it's working fine on the PC, so my reckoning is there's a bug in the phone. Has anyone else had a similar problem, and if so could you please let me know how you got round it? I'm close to tears now, as I just got shot of my dreaded K750i that drove me round the bend with it's faults!!!

Hellllp me pleeeease....

My N73 freezes up quite frequently when in camera or video, particularly after I take photo or video and then decide to delete.

Very slow in applications as well.

I flashed to Euro version 1 - I had (011) prior.

Really looking forward to a new and better firmware to fix the bugs. On another forum, a poster said that Nokia will be offering self flashes and a new firmware for the N73 soon.

Has anyone heard this or is it just a rumor?

Thank you.

Hi,

Just got this phone using latest firmware at beginnign of this thread. The phone runs very warm. I then noticed that the transmitting data 3G was always active. No data was being transferred as confirmed from the logs - however my battery tends to tie within about 25 minutes now, even if I turn off the phone and restart.

Software: N73 + Worldmate + Agile Messenger (none active).

The problem seemed to start when I tried to connect the cable to my PC and selected the PC suite mode.

Either way - can't seem to stop the wireless transmission. I have to assume the antenna is active in some manner as the phone is very warm and battery life is considerably shorter now.

Anyone had this problem? I'm going to disable the data access point on the phone - hopefully that should cool the phone down...

Yep just been checking that out myself. Good idea:icon14: S'pose it's like flashing a PC BIOS, really.

I've come across the memory full error when using the zoom in the gallery. I haven't been able to single out any app as yet.
It's zooming fine now with F-Secure still active in the background.

I got a N73 Phone, but i have a strange problem.. every time when i take a photo or transfer MP3 to my N73 phone, strangely enough that the pic/Mp3 wont not appear in the gallery. And i will have to go to Tools > File Manager > Memory card to look for it.

Any one has any idea how to tackle this problem?

I got a strange problem,

1) when ever i put the option "say caller tone" in my profiles menu. after some time, when a call comes, the phone restarts .

and the other one is

2) when we kept a theme. after restarting the phone the default theme replaces the selected theme.

can any one help me

Quite a bizzare problem with mine.

I transferred my contacts from my Sony Ericsson K800i 1 by 1 through bluetooth. Then i linked the n73 to the PC Suite and removed the last names and put it at the end of the 1st name, so each user has just 1 first name.

Contact, reading messages displays the names perfectly, but when i go to send a message, it shows the 1st name, and the old last name.

Very freaky!!!

So say Adam Smith is the first name, Smith used to be in the last name part. It shows Adam Smith Smith. Theres no way to remove it though!

Re: Pictures / music not appearing in Gallery - yes, I have this problem too - it seems that Gallery is reluctant to re-scan the phone's / memory card's memory sometimes.

The best solution I've found is to force Gallery to close using something like Taskman.

In the Contacts list it displays contacts sorted by last name. You can supposedly change this. If you go into Options -> Settings -> Name display, you have three choices "Last nm. First nm", "Last nm., First nm" and "First nm. Last nm". But selecting any option besides the first one ("Last nm. First nm") is ignored.

This is extremely frustrating to me because I'm accustomed to searching for my friends by their first name, not their last name.

I find the radio reception on the N73 pretty poor. Seems not to be as good as my previous Sony Ericson phone.

It's rare that I get a proper stereo signal even on the main stations and if I do it keeps switching back and forth from stereo to mono, which I find very irritating, especially when listening to music.

I'd rather just listen in mono than put up with this, but there's no option to manually set it to mono only.

This is happening in central London, not some remote location in the mountains, by the way.

Would be interested to know if anyone else is having this problem? Maybe there's a fault with my phone and I should get it replaced ... otherwise, is this something that a firmware upgrade might deal with?

I am having a serious issue with VOICE DIALLING on the N73. This is critical when using a bluetooth carkit with the phone in the bag.

As I can no longer attach my own voice tags to contacts, so I depend on Nokia's new sophisticated voice dialling feature, which should allow you to dial any contact in you list by voice.

I noticed that the voice commands (e.g. Voice recorder, Voicemail, etc) generally work flawlessly, but that's because these simple english words are easy to recognise.

However, when selecting "play voice tag" on a contact name, the N73 produces a strange sound with many names, which is impossible to match with my voice. Understandable, the device does not know how to pronounce a lot of names.

It seems that there is a learning feature in the N73, which means that the device learns how a name must be recognised. But if I cannot get the device to recognise the name in the first place, how can it learn how to pronounce?

Someone else reported on this forum that voicedialling works fine with the N73. Here in Europe, I have names in different languages. It is logical that the device does not know how to pronounce the name.

Another issue with voice dialling is that, unlike all previous nokia models, it does not repeat my choice, so when I am driving with my phone in my bag, it is a surprise who will be on the phone.

So, please Nokia, change the firmware and let me attach my own voice tag again to the contacts, which worked fantastic on all previous models.

Besides this, I believe this is the best Nokia phone ever. It is the perfect balance between weight/size and functionality. When the new Papyrus version is launched, then there is no reason anymore to keep my PocketPC.

I think I've only found one Major problem with my N73 so far.

When I plug in my earphones (using the nokia adaptor) I can hear some feeback noise even though nothing is running and playing. When I start playing audio I can still hear this noise in the background. Anyone else notice this?

It seems the N73 is crying out for a major firmware update. Hope Nokia releases one soon.

I have a Pioneer Bluetooth Kit ( built into the head unit of the Pioneer Stereo )

My 6680, 7610 Samsung SGH 500 and SE M600i all work with it.

My N73 doesnt work for the audio - starts, dials and terminates the call from the kit but no in call audio.

Here's an annoying bug:

When email headers are downloaded, when some that are not read (i.e. actual email not downloaded, for example, spams), if they are selected to be Delete from Server, the email app will crash and exit.

The fix is to download all email, then delete from server.

This really needs to be fixed.

Another bug with email, this time with SMTP setup (under Outgoing e-mail):

If the port is not the default, entering a number more than 3 digits would make the OK button disappear. Therefore, I can't enter a port number such as 8889, which is used for some email servers as the alternative port.

This is more of a feature request related to the Nokia Flickr upload:

Currently there is no way to specify the privacy of images to be uploaded (they're all public). For this tool to be useful, it needs to provide the options for setting the privacy, and the photo set to places the images in.

Oxygen Phone Manager II for Symbian OS Phones should be installed on the PC, then the phone should be connected to the program, and in this way you may edit the phonebook, To-DO list and Calender, Gallery, Message section fro your PC in the phone.
Please specify your connection type if you need connection instructions.

I've got a very similar problem with my N73 and I've tried turning off the 3D tones without any success. Almost every time i recieve a call the ring tone breaks down really badly and sounds like it's running in slow motion! I got rid of my N70 after a year of suffering with exactly the same problem. After various firmware updates and sending the phone back to Vodafone for repair nothing fixed the problem.

The thought of putting up with this for the duration of a brand new 18 month contract is not an appealling one. Anyone else ever experienced this with either the N70 or N73 and if so, is there a way to stop it happening?

OK I just tried it myself and found it was taking 25 mins to download and install so I cancelled. It would obviously be better if we could download the installer over regular broadband to PC and install from there.

When running java apps I can't turn down the volume.

The secondary video camera (for video calls) has a lot of noise and seems to be white balanced for outdoor use and stucked. The video are VERY red indoors.

Blue noise on main cam in low light conditions.

When I have made my own shortcut configurations to the shortcut botton (the right one) I can't do any changes to it anymore.

Edit: The DRM protection stops med from sending my own files to another phone, stupid!

It happens also to me, with other brand of miniSD. The solution? Maybe a firmware uograde when available. Until then, make a remove card, without remove, keep the RAM clean as possible and make phone reboots. Not a only solution, but N73 is like that:frown:

Hi guys!

Big trouble here...

my N73 doesn't seem to recognize the contacts! I mean the contacts are at their place, but when somebody's calling, it shows only the number of that person ( and not the person's name as normally). Have to mention I've sent the contacts from the old 6680 through Bluetooth. Then 1 by 1 saved from Bluetooth message (Inbox) to Contacts with Options-> "save business card" .

Any solve for that?

Please help!!

Thanks in advance.

Make sure you don't have any duplicate entries in your contacts. If you do, the phone will not know which contact to associate a number with and will just display the number.

This is a Nokia limitation and affects all Nokia phones.

@stuclark- Thanks alot !! In fact, it had lots of duplication entries, cause' most of the contacts were copied from SIM card, then from old phone memory. I was stupid enough not to think about this. :stupid:

Works fine now! ;)

Much appreciated ! :shakehand

Hi Guys,
I'm having a problem with my N73 starting up.
Ever since I put a memory card in it (1Gb own-branded from mymemory), it doesnt boot up properly, and any alarms i set do not go off (i turn it off overnight). I tried it this morning without the memory card and it seemed to work fine.

I get the nokia logo on the screen and it doesnt usually go away. it won't turn off either, i have to remove the battery. sometimes it works after 2/3 goes sometimes it takes longer. also sometimes the nokia logo comes up then it goes black then it comes up again and freezes.

I've just re-booted it now and it seem to have started up ok but the last few morning it has failed.

my girlfriend has an N80 and the same memory card and has no problems.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I'm totally freaked out as I have never faced or heard of such problem as I've been using symbian phones for some time now. The problem is I installed some themes a few days back and then after a couple of days I again installed some more themes but found out that the themes I installed earlier has been deleted and been repalced with the newly installed themes. I tried to install the previous themes but the phone says unable to install whereas I can install the new themes easily.

This happened to me twice today as whenever I install new themes the previous themes get deleted and cannot be installed again. It's such a weird problem.

Can anyone help me out me please? I have never faced this problem with my 6630 or N70. Plz any suggestions???? :con? :con?

Hi guys:ciao:

I'm not new here, just not been around much.
Anyways, I have a problem with my N73. In fact it even happens on my 6670 too.
The handsets will sometimes suddenly reset/restart. It mainly happens when replying to SMS's. This happens if the SMS has come from any network including my network (Vodafone). This actually drains the battery somewhat rapidly as well.
I have just recently had the N73 back from Nokia, because it died halfway through a firmware upgrade at a service centre, but it still shows the above symptoms.

Has anyone else come across this problem and is it just one of those buggy things that the Symbian O/S does every so often.

Any ideas welcome.;)

No! Only, and annoying, the phone forgets memory card inside. I go try with other card, to see if is a card problem.

I also have a similar problem when using the AD-15 audio adapter on my N71, the hissing or noise, then it fades away when I use the radio or use music player, and btw the Radio reception on the N71 I found to be resonably good on most stations...

I fixed this issue ...Changing firmwares with different flashers did not help ..I had backed up the PM area before upgrade..so restoring it fixed the issue with airtel..so online upgrade or flashing in 3rd party flashers wont help ..If you have the PM file it's easy to restore...you cant use PM file from another N73 it'll make your phone permanantly locked and no easy solution now to unlock..so be careful while playing...I'll post if there is any easy solution....

Hello everyone. I appreciate all the excellent knowledge I have already gained from reading various threads in this forum, particularly this one.

I have had my N73 for about 3 weeks now, and for the first time tried to open Application manager. But it will not open! I tried opening it via pressing on the joystick, and via options > open. The screen goes blue/green as it usually does for entering a new screen, but then it reverts to the Tools menu screen.

Could this be why I cannot install Opera Mini? Starts the installation, but then says "unable to install". Have managed to successfully directly download and install 2 other small apps - AutoLock and the sms accelerator.

Have not been able to download new Firmware because also suffer from "updater connectivity problem" i.e. NSU gets stuck on step 2, does not find my phone.

V2.0628.0.1 (A7.03)(South Africa). Code 0542457. Windows XP Sp2. PC Suite 6.4*

Thanks.

Hi all, (long time lurker - first time poster)

Have had an N73-rm133 for a couple of weeks now. Have updated the firmware a few days ago and all seemed good. Untill....yesterday 2 weird problems have started occuring.

1) The slideshow has (for no apparant reason) started displaying the images in REVERSE ORDER. The images have not been changed or renamed in any way, and they still are labelled correctly by the phone (i.e 1/40, 2/40, 3/40 ...) I have tried everything I can think of, including copying all the pictures to the PC, deleting them from the phone, then copying them back again, but the slideshow still plays in reverse order. I can't find any options to change the order of display, so I am guessing this is a bug of some kind. Can anyone help?

2) Every now and then when opening the camera slider, the display will change the background image to horizontal for an instant in preparation to start the camera appication, but then it will jump back to the main menu. Even if the camera application icon is selected it will do the same thing. The camera application will not start. However, if the gallery is opened first and then the camera slider is pulled open it will work fine, and will continue to work for many hours (in the normal way - opening slider from any point will start the camera) and then (seemingly randomly) will do it again.

I have tried formatting the phone memory. And as I said the firmware was recently updated. Not sure what to try next. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks for your help and Merry Xmas

Dave

Hi nj7, I see you are online! Hope you have had a good day so far. I have. Very hot here in Durban.

Not having resolved my major problems yet, I will move onto a "weird" problem, seeing that Xeiss has raised his/hers. When I type "you" in an sms using predictive text, the result is "yot". This changes to you when I press *. Isn't that ridiculous? There is not even any English word I can think of that has "yot" as the first three letters, so why would that be the predicted default? Anyone else with this problem? Anyone with a solution to this problem?

Hi all,

first post here, have read through the 7 pages of this post to see if anyone has the same prob I have.

I have a 'sticky' voicemail symbol. Having spoken to a couple of people at Orange customer services they finally accepted its a bug and that there isn't a known fix at present. As they're not known for their technical expertise I wondered if anyone here could help.

The voicemail notification symbol doesn't go away ever, even having got a voicemail and deleted it, so each time I start the phone I get a 'new voicemail' notification.

The other main problem is the general sluggishness of the phone - its not exactly easy to use...

Also, some of the other sporadic probs other people have, i.e. camera not always activating when you open the slider, zoom memory issue etc...

I also, sometimes get a beep in my ear which I haven't been able to identify - not call waiting or text or battery warning or anything - not sure what this is.

I'm not sure how to find firmware version, but a mate who has one checked and reckons its on the latest one - I have searched the site on how what the keypresses are but I've come up empty handed...

btw also, what is 'packet date connection active' as after a phone call I often get this message.

Ok, speaking as a fellow Orange UK user, it would appear that you are experiencing the problems many Orange users have with the Orange branded version of the N73. Orange have this very nasty habit of developing a branded version of the Nokia firmware that is terribly bug ridden. The N73 is not the first, and probably won't be the last, phone to suffer from this. The guy in the Orange shop told me that the N80 had been dropped because it suffered so many faults. What he failed to say was that those faults were with the Orange branded firmware, not the actual phone. The only way to overcome this is to upgrade the firmware to a generic version. Firstly, key in the following on your phone...

*#0000#

This will give you your firmware version. Now, the very latest firmware version will be either 3.0638.0.0.30 or 3.0638.0.0.40. .30 is the Music Edition, .40 is the Internet edition. Both of these version are the same as far as the core OS is concerned, but the Internet edition has a few more pre-installed Internet type programs over the Music Edition and the Media Key function remains the same, whereas the Music Edition uses the Media Key as a direct access button to the Music Player.

What you now have to decide is, do you want to live with what Orange restrict you too and hope they upgrade their version soon, or do an upgrade yourself and risk invalidating your warranty/contract ?

If you want to make the change, it's a simple process. Firstly, decide on the version you want to upgrade to, then find out the product code for that version that matches your locality i.e. the UK. Then you use a piece of software like Nemesis Service Suite to change the product code of your phone to the new product code. Once you have done this, you can use the Nokia Software Updater tool to upgrade your firmware to the version you want (defined by the Product Code).

It's simple and takes about 10 minutes, but there is no going back, other than changing the product code back to the original. You can't regress back to the old firmware.

It may sound risky, but all I'm doing is pointing out both sides of the story. I got my N73 on an 18 month Orange plan, mainly so I can get my unlimted 8Mbps broadband for Ģ5 a month as opposed to Ģ19.99. By the same evening, I had seen the Orange branding and hated it with a passion. By the following morning I had decided to upgrade and did so without any problems whatsoever. I now have an N73 running the ME version of firmware and have all the financial benefits of the Orange package as normal. Many others have had the same good experience too.

Do a search on the forum and you will find loads of stuff relating to this. There is one post that outlines, step by step, what you need to do. I followed it and had no problems at all.

Sadly, branding is quite the norm nowadays, although I am sure that if the legality of it was called into question, it might not stand up in a court. However, when signing up to a deal with a network provider where they give you a Ģ500 phone for free, there are always clauses and catches that are legitimate, however immoral they may be.

Good luck and I hope I have helped in some way :)

The N73 is a great phone that can be limited by the network's branded firmware. Upgrading is simple and free and can open up the full power of the device to you.

Just a quick note- having spoken to a chap at Orange customer services, he suggested I update the firmware to the latest Nokia version - I asked him about warranties and he told me that it wouldn't affect it, so I think I'll have a good go at updating it.

EDIT: Sorted, cheers all. What a great forum, I now have an N73 running v3.0638.0.0.30 with my righthand key accessing the music player, which, for me, is fantastic! - the speed difference is great.

Only snags I hit were the choice of device when installing NSS, I ended up going for 'Virtual USB' if that helps anyone, I did go for another option first, but reinstalled NSS with the 'virtual usb' and the phone set to Nokia Suite mode and was away. changed the product code and then did the update from Nokia having backed up my phone to my 1gig mem card.

Cheers again for the help

Hi Rakesh and Spikebyt

Unfortunatley, theres is no tool on the phone for increasing the font, and no satisfactory dowload app either.

Type *#0000# and press the green key. This will bring up your firmware
version. Latest version is Version 3.0649.0.0.1. See the sticky at the start of "Nokia N71 and N73" forum for explanation of what is updated, and how to do it via Nokia Software Updater. Note, though, that phones bought through service providers will only have updates available if their service provider has authorised this. Therefore, you may find that you get the answer "no updates available" when you try and update. Look earlier in this thread for alternative ways of updating.

I am happy to report that I my issue of not being able to open Application manager, and NSU not finding my phone, have been resolved.

HI, upgraded my firmware to latest version and often get 'connection error' for phone calls and 'failed to send' on text messages.

I also have had this problem since updating to the latest firmware. It's happened twice, both times at the weekend. I'm on Vodafone and according to 191 they have had "problems with SMS messages". But, I found that if I turn off the 3G (in settings, changing from "Dual mode" to "GSM only") solves the problem. So I'm not sure whether it is the firmware or a problem with the vodafone/3G network

Ive recently used NSS to change the product code on my O2 branded N73 to enable me to update firmware to version 3.0649.0.0.1
Seemed to have no probs until i spilt a tiny bit of drink on the handset, and a few days later my fone keeps turning itself off - the screen will go black with a few white pixels and then completely blank, until i reboot it.
Im not entirely convinced its because of the water spillage because it was fine for nearly a week after that.
Anyone else experiencing probs with rebooting after updating firmware to this version?

Also, thinking about it, i have also added some software/games onto the handset since the spillage - could any of these be causing my crashing? What are my options - hard reset of the phone? Remove programs one by one to see if that cures the prob?

Acces 4 ringtones can B get at the music library and choose song and then set as ringtone.
Still nothing 4 message tunes....

You can set mp3s as ringtones by placing them in the c:/sounds/digital or e:/sounds/digital folder rather than music. This allows you to keep your music out of the ringtone selection (which in my case makes the list about 10 times as long...). It also allows you to choose an mp3 as your message tone.

I've not done too much experimenting, but it seems to solve the problem of not being able to choose your own message tone.

Will the "blue haze" on camcorder (and videos in poor light conditions) be fixed with a new upgrade...
And btw... when the new firmware upgrade is coming out?!
Thanks in advance for your replies :)

I need someone to help me with my problem please.
I have just done a software update of my N73 because it had some bugs, so the version software I have now is V3.0649.0.0.31 RM-133.
Now I have problems with making phone calls, every time i make one or two calls, then when i try to call once again to one of my numbers, it just doesn't do anything, it doesn't respond to my press,
but i can dial a number manually and make a call,
but cant call ny1 from the phone-book.

Okay, this might seem as a minor issue compared to all the high tech questions and remarks i read here, but hopefully someone can help me.

My previous N73 was stolen last weekend. I just received a new one from Vodafone, but the whole menu is different.
I have found out how to move and rearrange icons within the main menu, but how do i rearrange icons on my main screen?

The left hand button gives acces to messaging, which is fine, but the one on the right gives access to vodafone live. My previous phone had the clock there, which i would like to have there again. I am not able to snooze anymore because the clock is not on this access point in my phone. Hahah! I know, silly, but i loooooove to snooze!

Hope so can give me advice on this :-)

Cheers,

Desiree

You need to go to settings-> phone-> standby mode
In there you will find all the options for what you can assign where on the standby screen. By turning active standby on, you show a row of shortcuts, instead of having to remember which direction to push the joystick, and a selection of your appointments and to-dos.
It may not be possible to change the vodafone live button, but if you feel brave, you can flash the firmware to a generic model (see elsewhere for instructions on that).

I upgraded to ME 3.0705.1.0.31 yesterday. Everything went well until I restored my back up from the memory card. On rebooting, the phone wouldn't get past the Nokia logo on start-up. Had to remove the battery to switch off. Pressing down [and holding down] the Green+3+* buttons while switching on resolved the problem. All data restored, except the phone book. Luckily that was backed up on my pc. Phone is running much smoother now, but not sure exactly which bugs have been fixed.

When using special characters [ę, ô, ë, etc] in sms's, it still uses about 2 to 3 parts to send the message, even when it's just a couple of lines long.

My main issue however, when receiving 3GP video clips, a huge white border appears around the outside. When sending the same clip to my old 6600, this doesn't happen. Try and explain this to either Nokia or my Network provider... Well, need I say more. [Where they manage to find the level of incompetance to employ at their call centres are beyond me!] Nokia blames the Network and vice versa...

Anyone got info or solutions to either there problems? When sms'ing in my mother tongue, I use special characters quite frequently. The problem was not present in the old generation phones.

Thanx

- Sometimes when restart the phone, it can't detect miniSD card. I have to unplug, then insert the card into the slot again.
- I can't configure the shortcut in multimedia key (the right button next to the key "3"). When I go to Configure and press to select another application, it goes back to startup screen.
- I can't connect to computer in mass storage mode, even when I switch the phone to Offline mode. It is said that memory card in use by another application.

Ok. So:
1. Try another card. Same happens to me, before use a Sandisk Ultra II card;
2. Shortcut button, should be firmware, no problem to me;
3. Any third application is running on background, like themes, or messages on card;

Seems that nobody's experiencing the 3GP problem I described above. Noticed that 3GP's are converted into 3G2's during mms download. Anybody knows what that means?

After the upgrade to v3.0705.1.0.31, my speed dialing has now stopped working. Cannot open the speed dial app and nothing happens when pressing & holding a speed dial button. It is activated in call settings.

It seems that the song skip button on the headset still not works in MusicPlayer. Works fine with radio & hands-free dialing. Firmware bug?

I kinda managed to fix it. Here's how i did it. I connected my N73 to my computer and chose connect as mass storage device than i went into WMP---Tools---Options---clicked on the devices tab and opened N73's properties. Unchecked the option to create folder Heirarchy and synced my playlist. I than disconnected and reconnected the phone and chose connect as media player device. i than synced my playlist to get the track list on my phone.

My pimped up regular Nokia N73 to Music Edition, has worked flawlessly since the update. I now have firmware v3.0649.0.0.31.

The trouble I am experiencing now happend over night long after the firmware upgrade, it's that the phone freezes and won't access the MP3 player, messages, internett browser etc. It just hangs in the menu, and also a call just froze too yesterday.

I have considered either hard resetting the phone (how?) or just upgrading the firmware to the newest version 3.0705.1.0.31 - MUSIC EDITION. But before that I would like to do a content copy backup, but this doesn't work either! It stops at 48% on the calender..

I have tried to remove my Topram 2GB miniSD card to see if this is the reason, and looks like some of the problems are fixed. But still can't do a content backup, so looks like something is still of. Maybe a virus? Any tips please..

1. Does anyone know if the N73 will handle anything higher than a 2GB memory card with the new firmware?

2. I cannot log onto the IM service with Cingular and as far as I can tell the settings are all correct. Can someone please post the IM settings just to be sure? I have not found a site with correct combination of this particular phone and the IM settings for Cingular service.

Thank you.

1. No, the 2GB restriction is a hardware addressing restriction, therefore it is not possible for the N73 to recognise anything above 2GB.

2. Speak to Cingular.

it's just and only idea, but i am not able to try it

method:

put MiniSD into Card Reader (external or internal), or connect via N73 with MassStorage option and try to format 4+ GB MiniSD using PartiionMagic as 2 or more (depends on MiniSD Card volume) 2GB primary partitions, i think N73 should see more (means 2 or more) volumes (signed as E:, F:, ...)

as i wrote is only idea and hope  too, but possible, just dont have bigger MiniSD to try it

I suppose you could try it in any size card to see if the N73 will recognise a partioned card as 2 cards. I have a spare 128 mb, I will try it if I can find my copy of partion magic

Hi All

I am experiencing the following problems with my N73 - standard not the Music edition.

1) when receiving a call, 9 times out of 10 the phone will just lock up, screen will go black and the phone will restart - it will then show the green phone icon in the top right hand corner.

2) when making a call the phone will just drop its call, but still showing as connected.

3) when opening up the gallery the screen freezes for a couple of seconds (about 4) then decides it wants to crash out.

4) sometimes it just point blank refuses to use my bluetooth headset (O2 Ice) but its still listed as a paired device. hang up, dial again and it works.

i've had the phone about a month

O2 have refused to replace the phone, they said that i have to sent it away for repair (and do without a phone or pay £30 for a loan phone - nokia 1100 !jokin arnt ya.

does anyone have any ideas on how i can fix it (firmware upgrade)

I have just bought an N73 RM-133. The Voice Commands and Voice Tags do not seem to be available on the phone (this is the second one I have as I returned the first one because of this problem). When I go Voice Cmds>Profiles>Options>Playback I get an error message "Voice system error"

In contacts it does not generate voice tags for any contacts. I have tried deleting all contacts and adding new contacts but the phone still does not generate any tags. I have re-installed the firmware (3.0638.0.0.1), I have also tried resetting the phone to original settings but nothing works.

I see on this forum (stuclark) that the latest firmware for the N73 RM-133 is 3.0649.0.0.1 (which seems to address this issue). However when I try to update my phone, Nokia's website still shows 3.0638.0.0.1 as being the latest. The website asks for your model number to check which is the latest firmware and it tells me the one I have is the latest.

Could this be because my model is the Middle East and Africa version? Perhaps Nokia thinks we are not ready for such advanced technology? :)

Or am I just dumb and missing something?

i upgraded my standard n73 into n73 ME last month. lately, ive been getting message memory full. delete some data unable to perform operation, message memory full and when i check the phone memory details, i see that there are only around 100-150 kb left of free memory left from the 44mb available in the phone.

first, i check to see if the music player is on because i know this consumes lots of memory. .. and then even if it's already not running, the memory details appear to be the same. it has gotten to a point that i can't even receive SMS bec there is not enough memory.

it's impossible for me to run out of memory because ALL my major data. files are stored in my 26b memory card. i dont store anything much in the phone because im afraid it might slow it down.

anyway, upon researching, someone suggested that i reinstall the software update..but before this i made sure to backup phone memory to the memory card. after sometime, i finally finished the update! i restored the phone memory back to the phone from the MC. the first few minutes went well..until this mesage flashes again : message memory full. i check the memory and find out that there is only 6kb of mmory left in the phone.

has anyone encountered this problem?! i really really need help.

There are three types of memory on your N73.. The phone memory (44mb), The RAM memory (20mb) and Mini SD Card Memory.. It seems that the problem is with your phone memory... Check it by running

File Manager > Options > Memory Details

Carefully check this report to see which file/s consumed your phone memory..

I dunno much about computer stuff... all i can think is.. is it n73 can react as a moden so when we use n73 (on which features... i dunno)... we can get a connection to the internet...??? please do explain to me... appreaciate it!!! ;)

The N73 does not have WiFi capability. You will have to use either the USB connection or Bluetooth to use the modem in the phone.

I bought the phone off ebay and its not insured so i dont think i can i can send it to nokia or my tariff to fix. So what should i do? Buy a 'new Lcd screen display' from ebay for around Ģ25? Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

Hello.

I'm new here.

My N73 is pretty good up till now.

Just recently, I encountered a problem.

I wasn't able to call a number (the dial button doesn't work) , wasn't able to switch on the loud speaker and caller unable to hear me.

All of this problem will be gone upon restarting the phone.

The problem persists again after 1-2 days. Then, I have to restart the phone again to use the phone.

Tried updating the phone ...but 'no new update available' msg popped up.

What can I do to solve the problem ASAP?

Hi,
Someone here has had her N73 for a week or so and is experiencing the exact same problem as posted earlier. I wanted to know if anyone out there had managed to solve it without flashing it to a generic version? I won't do it with my N80, so I'm not going to recommend it to someone else...
I've changed the network to just GSM to prolong her battery life from automatic as she doesn't use 3G, but it now keeps connecting to GPRS, and the voicemail indicator is permanently on, even though she has no new messages.
It's an Orange branded phone (same as the previous persons) version:

Many thanks in advance...

Hello,

Just upgraded my firmware from 2.06 something to Version 3.0705.1.0.31 using Nokia Suite. I then restored my phone backup from my memory card. All going well so far.

But now I have no pictures in my gallery, the memory card keeps being detected as not present and the operator has gone from Virgin to T-Mobile? Not great.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

recently my n73 just keeps turning off all the time. if i turn it on.. put it in my pocket, then 30 seconds later it will turn off, even though it says its fully charged. and also when i turn it back on, the keypad is still locked. is this just a problem with the battery?

I believe your phone went into sleep mode. Is there a blue light flashing near the front camera bwxt to the Nokia logo? It ll come out of sleep mode if you press any of the buttons. You can also turn sleep mode off too.

You need Maps (aka Smart2Go) installed on your mobile phone before using the MapLoader application to install the maps.

Hi, I bought my n73me 3 months ago. Now I am facing a serious issue.
when I open the back camera cover some times the camera wont start,
Some times the camera app may close unexpectedly.
I think the problem is with the battery cover which is a little loose. when i apply some force on the battery cover, camera closes. I dont know whether the two contact pins are causing problem

Any one experienced this problem ?, plz reply ?

Thankz

Same thing to me. Iīm not sure either, if it was firmware or back cover. When that happens it have from Nokia a new firmware. So I do the upgrade, but a same time, I clean well the metal contacts inside the phone and the plastic fixation between back cover and the phone case. After that it works well, without that kind of failure.

I made a thread about this. The problem came up when I upgraded to ME. Also, right after I install maps.

I tried reinstalling and cleaning contacts but have no luck there.

I'm running v3.0705.1.0.31 on my N73 ME and have spotted a couple of problems, one definitely firmware related but another may be to do with the phone's hardware.

Basically when the phone is in a handsfree Nokia car kit (eg the CK7W) the audio quality is much tinnier and quieter than other corresponding mobiles (notably a Nokia 6680 and 6380). When you play music through the phone it sounds fine, just callers sound a bit thin on bass etc.

The other problem I've noticed is when you dial a number and get a network/line busy tone, the phone sometimes momentarily locks up and doesn't allow you to press the end key until the tones time out from the networks side of things.

Hi richard, im with Virgin aswell and the last time i updated the firmware my Virgin went from that to T-mobile, thats what line Virgin use as they rent it out from them.

There is nothing you can do to get it back to Virgin, i called virgin up and said there was a problem with my phone and got it replaced lol
so iv now got a Virgin handset again altho im very reluctant to update the firmware version again.

Oh one other thing, i bet you cant go on the net when u updated yours lol
you have to get the settings sent back out to you from virgin.

i creeated a thread recently with the following problem but unfortunately, i didnt get any replies....

when i retrieve my emails on my vodafone n73, i set it so that it should only download the headers but for some reason, it downloads the whole email including any attachments. im not sure if this is a problem exclusive to the vodafone firmware (post your conspiracy theories here) or its a wide spread bug..

..please enlighten me with a solution or an explanation.

thanks in advance.

Another bug with email, this time with SMTP setup (under Outgoing e-mail):

If the port is not the default, entering a number more than 3 digits would make the OK button disappear. Therefore, I can't enter a port number such as 8889, which is used for some email servers as the alternative port.

Yeah, I have the same problem too with my N73 ME!!

Hi all, newbie on first posting.

I've recently got myself hooked up with a google calendar and have added Papyrus to the 73.

When I sync it all goes fine and sends any modifications that i've made on the phone calendar to the calendar on google.

Here's the problem - if I make any modifications to the google calendar they do not export onto the phone when I sync them.

Has anyone ant idea's on this ? I trawled through google's help screen but they were no good.

Thanks very much !

Hello all members,

i read many posts in this section, before asking, i know im not the only one with this issue.

When i close the camera phone software sometimes it freezes making the screen go blank and no function to work, iv waited long time but just turning it off worked. I wonder if this has been fixes for this, official or non official.

Another thing i was thinking on buying a MiniSD 4GB for this N73, do you gys know if it supports on with this capacity ?

Another last thingy, even with just GSM network solo enabled, the battery doesnt last long as i expected, maybe its me.

Thanks for the support

Ok, speaking as a fellow Orange UK user, it would appear that you are experiencing the problems many Orange users have with the Orange branded version of the N73.

I have the voicemail icon problem with my N73 and Orange but it's an unbranded phone, bought SIM free. I've so far had Orange send a SIM update, I've formatted the phone and done a firmware update but the icon is still there  . Frustrating but not terribly inconvenient.

However, the other problem I had was very inconvenient. I was away from home for 2 weeks and using the internet every day. All was going well, then suddenly, after about 9 days I could never stay connected for more than a minute or two. Pages (or emails) would start to download, stall, then eventually I'd get a message saying there was no network connection. This occurred whether I used the inbuilt browser, Opera or Opera mini. I called into an Orange store, they went through their standard sequence but nothing helped. Same with CS. Only thing that cured it was a firmware update (same version, it said there was nothing newer) when I got home. But that was rather too late  Has anyone heard of this network problem before and more importantly any cure in case it happens again?
many thanks

i used this forum´s fantastic manual to change product code for a regular N73 without branding, made the NSU update, everything OK.

Did the flash upgraded to V4.0723.2.0.1 a few weeks ago now. So far my only gripes are:

(1) Line 2 functionality still not there, despite getting Orange to do the necessary. Grrrrr...

(2) When restoring from the memory card, several "ghost" email mailboxes were created which are apparently devoid of settings. They have the same names as the old mailboxes but I can't update or delete them as they do not appear to be recognised when using the email/mailbox settings menu. I can create new mailboxes but the "Ghost" ones take up space (there are now 6 of them)

(3) Whenever the phone is switched off, even if only for a few seconds, you are immediately p;rompted to re-set the date and time.

Any ideas folks?

Many thanks

dont know wether you changed product codes but i had problems after changing to me firmware had no shortcut keys and couldnt access settings, worked out that it was because i had restord backup from mem card, copy anything you can to mem card but dont do it as a backup, you are goin to lose things but format phone then copy contacts and whatever else you managed to keep back your phone should work fine, think it was something to do with the different product code before and after backup and restore after firmware change. peace

Since upgrading my N73 ME to v4.0727.2.2.1 I've now noticed the alarm clock doesn't work when the phone is turned off (ie it fails to switch the phone back on when it should). The alarm also appears to disappear from the set time when you turn the phone off and on again.

This has annoyed me somewhat as I use this feature nearly everyday. Assuming Nokia probably won't release another firmware update for the N73, how do I go about rolling the software back to v3.07? Can a service centre do this for me?

hi

im a newbie and i just bought my n73 music ed recently. i bought this phone for what i thought was it's superb camera, but some of the small issues really irks me. I can't get the shutter sound off (which isn't really such a big deal, i just don't want to disturb ppl around me), and i can't turn off the flash. (which really annoys me! i was taking a picture in an art gallery not allowing flash photography, with the flash set to 'off', imagine my embarrassment when the light came on!) even when i set the flash mode to off, the light still comes on. is there anyway i can rectify this or solve it thru software upgrade. using asian version.

I would like to note one, what I think is, bug in the 4.0727.2.2.1 version, for the ME N73.

After having problems with my one week old N73's microphone, and some Googling, I noted that many people have similar issues with the N73'mic, and adress that to the buggy firmware.

Well, I have to note that the problem exists in the latest firmware (4.0727.2.2.1) for the Music Edition too. People can barely hear my voice, with lots of static, cracking, and disconectiong. Restart of the phone fixes the problem. Since I have the phone for only one week, the problem has not repeated itself yet, and I hope it won't, but I though it is worth mentioning...

Nenad

OK. I bought this phone to use it as a digital camera. After all, that is what is says on the box:

"The Nokia N73 multimedia device is a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, mechanical shutter, and auto-focus, giving you vivid photo quality for prints up to 10" x 8"

Than, how come that my new N73 has images with file size <500kb, lower than my 1.3 megapixel 6630??
If I wanted a show-off phone with 3.2mpxl cam, I would have bought the N80, with it's Wi-Fi support, and better display. Instead, I got the N73, hoping that it would replace my digital camera, and account for one less device in my bag. Don't get me wrong, I have the Canon 400D, 10mp camera, and I use it too, but I got the N73 to serve the purpose of taking occasional snapshot where I need quick photo document.
Since the phone uses Carl Zeiss optics, mechanical shutter, and auto-focus, I am confident that the problem is not in the device itself, but in the software (firmware) controlling it, and with some tweaking and some more camera options, like compression quality of the image, the N73 can be one above average camera phone...

just wanted to vent a bit, waiting for the new firmware to come out...

cheers,
Nenad

Hi, I've had my n73 ME for a couple of weeks now.

I only have one issue with my n73, and I'm otherwise very happy with it. I experience random shutdowns.

I have never experienced it while I was actively using the phone, it happens sometime when its on power-saving mode. i.e. the mode where the screen is off and the LED is blinking. Somehow, it goes to sleep and never wakes up!

I then need to push the power button to turn it back on.

I'm using the latest firmware at this time and I only have 119 mins on the life timer.

N70 is Series60 2nd Edition. N73 is Series60 3rd Edition.

N73 supports .sis and .sisx but only Series60 3rd Edition versions.

They are not compatible and neither is the software. You will need to buy new 3rd Edition versions of your software.

Ok, I've been reading these forums for some time, but only some 10 days ago I bought N73 so I decided to register and post...
I like the phone, display is impressive (though I have a dead pixel in the upper part but with light theme, it is unnoticeable)
So, to post some of my problems... I have upgraded it to the latest ME software for Middle East...
- I cannot turn of camera sounds or flash completely
- when I turn it off and on, I have to enter date and time, but I set the auto update, sometimes I don't have to
- the keyboard is the worst I had worked with :frown:
- data cable won't hold the connection always, I have to move it to fit into working position
- I use IVT Blusoleil drivers for bluetooth on my PC, and at first I had no problems, but now I can't connect it to PC, send anything or receive, cannot use programs like Bluetooth Remote Control... but the mobile works great with other phones, and also my PC connects with other phones without problems
That's all for now, I hope that something of this is fixable and that I won't have to post anymore problems here
thanks all

I have bought a DKU-5 Cable for my n73 and I'm not sure that it is the right cable for my phone. It has more pins than CA-53, which works perfectly with my phone. So do you think it is possible to connect my phone with the DKU cable

the dku-5 cable is compatible with n73...i use it...and i think it is standard cable for n73..

Plz help me!!
I've just changed my n73's product code, replacing the original with the first music edition one of the dedicate post...
The problem is that i'm italian, and after upgrading i realized that the ONLY language supported by the cell now is English...this should not be a problem, but now i can't write my messages with T9 because it uses the english dictionary.
If I try to upgrade with another version it says that i can't because i've jet installed the last firmware...
What can I do to have back my language on the phone (at least in T9)?????

Please help me because i'm desperate!!!:s:

What you need to do is before you install the theme set your date back 1 year :)

Once the theme is installed you can then change the date back to normal :D

Your Welcome ;)

Strange... Obvious, should not occur. Just repeat the upgrading process, and see what happens.

After installing the latest PC Suite (6.86.9), the program won't recognize my N73 phone anymore. I plug it in, select PC Suite on my phone and XP gives me an error that there was a problem installing the drivers and your device may not work properly...basically it can't install the drivers but when I switch to Data Storage Mode, it works without a problem.

And now that I updated the program, I can only go to my PC Suite that came with the phone which is ancient (but works). Help? :con?

PS: I also have the latest (legit) update on my phone (non-ME)

EDIT: Firmware is Nokia N73 (RM-133) 4.0735.3.0.2

Just to follow up, this turned out to be a memory card problem, presumably unrelated to the upgrade. The messages were set to be stored on the memory card and the card was evidently failing because a few days later it was unusuable - couldn't even format it in linux

But since I replaced the card there seem to have been no problems.

Hi all,

first post here, have read through the 7 pages of this post to see if anyone has the same prob I have.

I'm not sure how to find firmware version, but a mate who has one checked and reckons its on the latest one - I have searched the site on how what the keypresses are but I've come up empty handed...

btw also, what is 'packet date connection active' as after a phone call I often get this message.

ok beep you hear could be the message which u just recieved.Packet data connection means gprs , means when you use gprs to send and recieve info it ineracts with you through packet data.its a mean of carrying information.

Hi all, first timer here.

A few days ago I thought it would be a good idea to update my N73. After the update however I saw that Greek had been removed from my phone. After a lot of searching, I found out about product codes and how to change them. I changed the product code to a Greek one (the original was the standard european, 0539335) with NSS and then went on to upgrade with NSU. But because I updated to the latest version before I changed the product code, NSU is saying that I have the latest version so it is not possible to update again.

So, my question is this: can I roll back to a previous firmware version? And if not, how can I simply load Greek to my phone again?
