Well, I’ve had my E70 for about 6 hours no and so far I’m delighted. There’s going to be a bit of a learning curve coming back to S60 after UIQ but I’m sure it’ll be worth it.
I’m definitely going to need a case as there’s no lanyard option. Pdair seems favourite. It’s also a disappointment that there’s no proper (even passive) car cradle for it. I like my phone fixed when in the car – and I’m certainly not going to sucker it to the windscreen. I’ll need to get a wired boom mike. The P900 had an excellent cradle that allows 12v charging and a wired headset.
But on the positive side, the screen’s fantastic – I’m not going to miss the bigger size of the P990 (or the N73/N80/93 I might have chosen) because that resolution is stunning. I was worried about reading web pages that small but no problems at all. I will install Opera Mini to see how it compares with the “Web” application. (although using the joystick as a “mouse” is pretty cool).
Keyboard is pretty good too. It’s no Psion 5MX but I’ll soon be faster (and more accurate) than I was on the P900 writing on screen
The camera is beyond my expectations. I consider myself a “serious amateur” photographer and I didn’t worry about giving up the megapixels of the N series alternatives – if I really want a picture I’ll use a proper camera. But the E70 is certainly better than I would have hoped and the video mode is brilliant given its limited hardware (I’m going to need a BIG memory card).
I’ve already downloaded the “must have” apps at home – so they’ll get installed at the weekend. Just matter of working out how to do themes to get the plain white background that Steve refers to.
It’s got firmware 1.0610.05.07 but I didn’t notice any particular slowness in switching the screen orientation when opening the keyboard – it wasn’t instant but I’m not complaining. Bit of a pain not being able to enter numbers directly into cells in Sheet but you can’t have everything.
I had to agree to a long contract extension with Vodafone to get this as a free upgrade but I think I will be happy with this phone for a while. All I need is a S60 3rd Edition version of the “Amazing World Game” and I’ll be as happy as a pig in s**t.
Oh, and it seems to work fine making and recieveing phone calls as well :D
