View Full Version : W950i known problems
stuclark 03-11-2006, 10:30 AM Post all known W950i problems in this thread. Include your firmware version where possible.
I'll start:
A reboot is required before some settings (e.g. ring tones) correctly apply.
Radio does not auto-tune on first run. A reboot is required before it starts working.
Firmware: CXC162037 R9C001
superswede 04-11-2006, 03:51 PM On every power on my phone starts with two error codes:
1.
Application: Main
Reason code: KERN-EXEC
Reaon number: 0
2.
Application: !MIDP2.SystemAMS.Installer
Reason code: DBMS-Table
Reaon number: 11
After pressing "Proceed" phone completes power on "normally". E.g. I can't actually se if any programs does not function properly but this error messages are quite anoying.

Interesting that this device is now out in the real world. Or do you guys have pre-production units?

That confused me as well but Expansys have them in stock here (http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=131171)
So I guess they are the real thing.
stuclark 06-11-2006, 10:38 AM Yep, mine is an Expansys full production version. Pretty nice phone apart from the few bugs.
Another one - when enabling automatic (timed) email retrieval, you then can't send emails unless you enable SMTP authentication, you get a "bad return address" error.
No problems at all with my O2 supplied W950.

Sound reproduction is staggering when used with the DS970 :)

Pay Monthly Contract with O2
1. USB Fast file transfer doesn't work on two different Windows XP SP2 computers, one a brand new fresh install (a Compaq PC). Neither PC registers a device connection whenever the phone connects in "fast file transfer" mode, data can only be transferred in "Normal" mode. It makes no difference when using USB1 or USB2 ports. "Normal" mode equates to approximately 100KB/s transfer speed, making music transfer very, very painful.
2. Bluetooth - Nokia 770 will connect once, then 770 needs to be rebooted before a second connection can be established. 770 had problems (timeouts) pairing with the W950i as well. Could be a Nokia 770 problem, but this device worked flawlessly with a SE T610.
3. Contact manager is flakey - if I choose Groups view, when I enter contact manager it displays the groups for a few seconds then switches automatically to "All" view.
ShedofEd 20-11-2006, 01:54 PM I think I must have the most unusable W950i out there at the moment. Fair enough it's a pre-release model (actually used in the new TV ad on air at the moment) but seems to share firmware versions with a lot of supposedly 'Released' handsets. Have had it nearly 3 months now - using it on O2 but it's SIM free.
As SuperSwede I get the following 2 errors at power up:
Application: Main/Reason code: KERN-EXEC/Reason number: 0
Application: !MIDP2.SystemAMS.Installer/Reason code: DBMS-Table/Reason number: 11
But then, depending on day of the week and wind direction, I have experienced:
CALLS: Unable to answer calls via screen, keypad, wired headset or DS970 BT headset. (Phone battery has to be removed to stop ringing - even if caller has hung up!) I can usually tell I won't be able to answer without touching the phone as contacts from SIM come up as number rather than name. Frequency - every 2nd or 3rd call (I can get about 50 calls a day in my job).
WALKMAN: Phone freezes between tracks on playback to DS970. Seems to be particular tracks that do it but tracks from the same album (ie: encoded and transferred identically) play fine. Maybe my W950i is trying to say something about my taste in music. Again - battery out to reset phone. Frequency - once a day (in an hour of commute listening).
FILE MANAGER: Certain albums deleted from /music memory still appear in album listing despite having reformatted memory. Can't get rid of these no matter what I try.
IMAGES: Certain JPG images won't display in Wallpaper view (appear as broken icon) but will sometimes work if copied to phone memory. Using images as wallpaper or screensaver seems to increase likelihood of phone crash so I've stopped doing it.
OTHER: Too many glitches to mention but general seemingly random freezing without notice every hour or so of use. Hard to tell phone frozen until you try to use it or someone tries to ring it. And I lost a stylus already - thankfully nearly identical replacement found on eBay for 99p.
But you know what, I still love this phone. Once a FW update comes I'm hoping I'll be sorted - if not I'll have to send it back to be flashed but it's still amazing.

I found out that the application errors at start-up was (partially) caused by my installed Exchange ActiveSync Client. But only partially since I had a similar error message "out-of-the-box". Anyway, I perfomed a complete format of the internal drive (I did NOT use the option "Master reset", to "weak", but the "Format internal disk" option available from within "Service Menus" (access service menus by typing this when on std-by screen):
*
jog dial up
*
jog dial down
jog dial down
*
jog dial down
*
NOTE!! This will complete remove all installed things on the device, this includes languages (excluding English), themes, ringtones, e.g. complete sets the device to factory defaults.
The positive thing is that my device now works fine. The "..!MIDP2..." error is a Java-error. After format and again having installed the ActiveSync client the problem reoccured. I think it's caused by the security policy used by our Exchange 2007 (E12) which enables "inactivity lock" on the device.
What I did: Terminated the "SyncScheduler" task using "Swiss Manager" (SyncScheduler is not visible using the included "task manager"). Unchecked the "Inactivity lock". Restart device. All now works fine!! No error messages!!
ShedofEd 20-11-2006, 09:00 PM SuperSwede, you are indeed quite bloody Super.
Just jogged through your instructions and I have a new phone!!
No start up errors. Seemingly running menus a lot faster. Quadrapop works! Nightclub Manager has appeared! Formatted flash drive and no more sticking albums I'd previously deleted.
I'm off to fill it full of media files now to test it proper and I'll report back tomorrow on the answering crash issues but I'm very hopeful.
I will pass this on little 'hack' on wherever I have the chance.
Many many thanks indeed.

Which version of PC Suite do you use? If it's 1.2.15 pls review http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53868, e.g. A LOT of people have connection problems when using this version of PC Suite. I had no problems until I upgrade to this one...

Hi superswede - yes, it is 1.2.15. You seem to have the exact opposite problem to me, as I can connect to a PC in "normal" mode OK (if you can call 100KB/s transfer speed "ok"!) but I've had absolutely no luck getting a PC to register a "Fast file transfer" connection - it's as if the phone is not plugged into the PC, but the phone has registered the PC connection correctly, grrrr! :(
I've also not had any problems with mRouter.
I've emailed SE (via the SE support web site) asking about the problem I'm having but haven't yet received a reply (anyone know how good they are at replying?)
I'm beginning to think the phone is defective as it's the same behaviour on two different PCs, or it could be the firmware in the W950i. This is a major flaw with this phone - transferring 3GB of music in "normal" mode took almost 12 hours, and this transfer mode doesn't appear able to handle multiple directory levels either!
For example, if I have two albums for the same artist in this structure:
Chicane
|
+---- Behind The Sun
|
+---- Far From the Maddening Crowds
When I copy the "Chicane" directory to \Music on the phone, I end up with:
Chicane
|
+---- Behind The Sun
|
+---- Behind The SunFar From the Maddening Crowds
Total carp!
superswede 23-11-2006, 09:15 AM I don't think you're problem is related to the phone (e.g. defective ph.), I still beleave it's related to the 1.2.15 version of PC Suite.
You're using the software that came on CD with the phone or have you upgraded (e.g. do you have another version available on CD that you can try with..)?
Milhouse 23-11-2006, 11:22 PM I've tried 1.2.15 (from the SE website) and 1.2.14 (from the CD that came with the phone). I haven't been able to find any other versions so far. I'm going to take my phone over to my brothers and try it on his NForce3 motherboard (having failed to get it working on an NForce2 and Compaq motherboard and VIA chipset add-in card).
Milhouse 24-11-2006, 01:25 AM Have just got back from a friend where we installed 1.2.15 on a Dell/Intel based motherboard and once again Fast Transfer fails to work - it's as if the phone isn't plugged in... will get hold of a new cable, and if that doesn't help the phone is going back to O2 as defective... :(
Milhouse 25-11-2006, 11:49 AM New cable has arrived - hasn't made any difference, on the bright side I've now got a spare data/charging cable! :)
I contacted SE customer support and they were unable to get the phone working, so we have now agreed it's knackered and O2 will be sending me a new phone, should have it sometime next week. Will update with any progress! :)
pl_svn 26-11-2006, 10:53 PM 1. I had this phone for a week now, and in two occasions (UMTS) Network Connection was lost. Changing to Manual just reported: No Network Available and I haven't found any other way to recover apart than restarting the phone!
2. Not all Cover Arts appear (I'm using a Mac and iTunes, but I don't think that's the reason)
3. Music Player crashes when attempting to browse my Music in Album or Artist view (I think it's related to problem 1)
4. If battery drains 'till phone auto power-off, after restart I receive *some* SMSs with nonsense text
I bought the phone on eBay, from a German seller, because here in Italy it will (someday: nobody knows when!) only be available from TIM and... 1) I am not a TIM customer, 2) I hate logos ;-)
Firmware is... how do I find firmware version?
superswede 27-11-2006, 04:17 PM 2. Not all Cover Arts appear (I'm using a Mac and iTunes, but I don't think that's the reason)
3. Music Player crashes when attempting to browse my Music in Album or Artist view (I think it's related to problem 1)
I do also have this problem but I believe that prob #3 is related to #2.
Firmware is... how do I find firmware version?
Select "More > Status" when in main menu. From what I understand Firmware = "Organizer". I think CXC 162088 R1B01 is the latest. You can have another firmware if it's a "branded" model.

... sorry: I changed problems order and forgot to correct! #_#

Thank you, superswede :-)

Bluetooth: CXC 162058 R3A01

It's an *unbranded* model: as I stated in my previous post, in Italy it *will* only be available from TIM (*not* my service provider) so I bought it, on ebay, from a German seller.
In the next couple of days I'll try to bring it to SE assistance to see if there's a new firmware availaible: I can live (for a few weeks ;-) without Cover Arts but not with Network Connections drops. Hey: isn't it supposed to be "also" a phone? ;-)

Yes, but we also need more precise descriptions of when and how your problems were found. In order to try evaluating or fixing a problem, we need to be able to re-create it.
billywrong 28-11-2006, 04:27 PM ok - I'll try my best
1) Remote syncronisation doesn't work - fails to connect to remote server but doesn't display anything more useful than "Failed"
Set up an account with www.mobical.net. This worked fine with my old phone and I know it works fine for other users of w950i's. I spoke to mobical and they tell me a session is never established when I run remote synchronisation. On the phone I see, "Connecting" then "Connected" then "Failed" - nothing more useful... if only there was some kind of log to look at :(
2) Phone crashes randomly - locks up and battery out is the only way to refresh
This has happened in a number of ways, not such a big issue as the above for the moment - will post exact details next time it happens.
3) Song stuck playing - had to turn off the phone to get back into the walkman!
Was listening to a song, switched to main menu to check some settings (didn't actually change anything). TThen clicked the wlkman button and it hangs. Can't get into the walkman whatever I do. Song is still playing but I can't stop through phone ui or using attached remote control. Again - will try and post more exact details next time it happens
thanks all for any ideas (fyi - I reformatted the disk and reset up my phone but made no difference).
pl_svn 30-11-2006, 12:03 PM ... so I went to SE assistance, yesterday. The latest available firmware was installed and... you guess? It's exactly the same that was factory installed.
All the problems with Music Player still are there. The other two I was reporting... I'll tell you next time (hopefully *if*) they arise again.
Anyway... at SE they told me that, to identify firmware versions, they *only* look at the last part of line "Phone", the one that says e.g. R9C001 (this is the latest).
Anyone who has an earlier version can upgrade, all the others... have to wait for SE to release next bug fix :-(
pl_svn 30-11-2006, 12:07 PM ... oh, btw... mine was the first and only w950 the had seen, so far, in the real world ;-)
TicTac 01-12-2006, 12:19 PM When I set my W950i to Normal mode, I get nothing but a yellow exclamation mark next to 'W950i' in the USB Controllers list in control panel device manager (says drivers not installed), when I RIGHT-CLICK and select UPDATE DRIVER, it finds the driver from the CD and while installing the drivers it says 'sony ericsson composite device' but then says 'CANNOT INSTALL THIS HARDWARE - AN ERROR OCCURRED DURING THE INSTALLATION, THE SYSTEM CANNOT FIND THE FILE SPECIFIED, CLICK FINISH TO CLOSE THE WIZARD'
When I set my W950i to FAST FILE TRANSFER mode, the W950i is removed from the USB Controllers list (along with the yellow exclamation mark!) and the list is closed.
Without the Normal Mode I cannot update my phone using the SE Update Service
My FAST FILE TRANSFER mode is working fine! if anyone's having prbs with FFT, I'd suggest you double-check your USB 2 drivers are installed properly
I was using PC Suite v1.2.14 but upgraded to v1.2.15 - problem persists
I'm on O2 UK, firmware below. . .

Milhouse 02-12-2006, 10:21 PM TicTac - I've been unsucessful getting Fast File Transfer mode to work on 3 PCs (1x NVidia NForce2 chipset, 1x Intel chipset in a Dell Optiplex GX280, 1x VIA chipset add-in board). The Intel and & Via PCs were rebuilt from scratch using a slipstreamed version of Windows XP SP2 - no other software was installed other than the SE PC Suite and all updates from MS, yet they still wouldn't work! All yellow exclamation marks have been resolved automatically once the drivers are installed, I've used both 1.2.14 and 1.2.15. Nothing I've tried (including all suggestions from SE customer support) has made any difference - the PCs just do not "see" my phone when it is connected in FFT mode (works fine in "Normal" mode).
I'm now waiting for O2 to send me a replacement phone.
Milhouse 05-12-2006, 02:02 PM New phone has arrived from O2 this morning, and Fast File Transfer mode is s working great on the *NEW* phone (on all 3 PCs too!) :)
This confirms the original phone is defective, and is going back to O2 tomorrow.
The firmware on the new phone is identical to the old/defective phone, so no changes their.
superswede 06-12-2006, 08:48 AM Are you using 1.2.15 or 1.2.14 (e.g. does it work using 1.2.15 of PC Suite)?
Dinalli 06-12-2006, 01:13 PM when i power the phone on, I get 2 delivery messages from 4 months ago apear all the time. I suspect these are on the sim somewhere.
I cant find a way to delete them or not have them pop up.
Im on a week old Vodafone UK branded handset.
Milhouse 06-12-2006, 03:31 PM Are you using 1.2.15 or 1.2.14 (e.g. does it work using 1.2.15 of PC Suite)?
Currently using 1.2.14 on my main PC, but 1.2.15 also works on one of the test PC's. Ultimately my problems were not software related - the phone was defective.
hienlinh 10-12-2006, 01:01 AM I just bought the sony ericsson w950i about a month ago. it is a triband phone and to my understanding that means that my phone should be able to pick up a pretty good signal. but everytime i go into buildings, even in big city areas, i have no bars. has anyone experienced the same problems? is there a fix for this? :con?
superswede 11-12-2006, 12:50 PM I just bought the sony ericsson w950i about a month ago. it is a triband phone and to my understanding that means that my phone should be able to pick up a pretty good signal. but everytime i go into buildings, even in big city areas, i have no bars. has anyone experienced the same problems? is there a fix for this? :con?
Being a triband phone is not related to ability to pick up a good signal. Triband means that it can be used in countries using the different GSM frequency ranges (900/1800/1900). 900 and 1800 are used in most parts of the world and 1900 (and 850) is mainly used in US & Canada.
Your problem is probably related to poor signal coverage in the 3G network (WCDMA), hence not related to the signal coverage of any of the above stated networks. 3G is by default enabled, and the preferred network, in W950i but you can disable it if you want or at least you should verify that the settings on the phone says "GSM and 3G" (instead of "3G only"). It will with this setting primarily use the 3G network and "2G" (GSM 900/1800/1900) only when 3G is not available. This could however result in poor signal quality as long as there is 3G network coverage available (although a 2G network with better signal also is present..).
In W950i you have the following settings available:
- GSM only (e.g. 900/1800/1900 networks)
- 3G only (WCDMA networks)
- GSM and 3G (..booth..)
...of course, if you select "GMS only" you will not be able to benefit from the "high" speed data access that theese networks can provide (384kbps in 3G vs 56kbps in 2G networks on devices that lack support for enhanced GPRS/EDGE).
In Norway, where I live, my experience is that 2G in general provides a lot better coverage, even in major cities, than 3G. It also provides better sound quality then 3G. Last but not least, using only 2G network instead of 3G increases your phone's standby and talk-time dramatically. I use the setting "GSM only" and I enable the "3G only" when I really need the data transfer speed that 3G can provide (e.g. using the phone as a modem for my laptop).
superswede 11-12-2006, 01:21 PM ...everytime i go into buildings, even in big city areas, i have no bars... :con?
This is quite typcial for 3G networks. A 3G transmitting antenna has a shorter range than a 2G antenna, hence it's more sensitive for "disturbances" such as buildings etc. You could check with your network provider about the 3G network coverage in the area where you're experiencing the poor signal.
iv had my w950a month and these are the problems iv had already;
the most annoying first, after reseting the phone it deleted all but 3 of the factory installed ringtones and pictures it deleted all videos as well.
another problem is the keylock does not lock the play button on the side so after accidently pushing the button removing the phone from my pocket and leaving it i come back to find the battery half dead while it chirps away some tunes on its lonesome
i also have a bluetooth car stereo and connecting this phone is annoying as every time i have to turn the bluetooth off then on again just to get it to connect why does the phone not actively seek devices all the time whilst the bluetooth is turned on
and finally while talking on the mobile it gets real hot i think this may because of the backlight staying on all the while a call is active and this cannot be turned off only dimmed
if someone knows how to fix any of these problems please let me know
grenhornetuk 21-12-2006, 02:21 PM I am having a problem with my W950i on Orange. It is using the latest firmware from the sony website. I cannot find the TrackID option on the phone and also I get a kernel error when trying to spell a word in the text dictionary but only when replying to a text, when starting a text from scratch this option is ok. any help appreciated.
@ grenhornetuk
Go to your entertainment menu and choose sound recorder, you will find the function for track id there :)
grenhornetuk 24-12-2006, 02:03 PM The track ID option is not there on the orange version.
Sorry then I don't know! It's there on O2.
Milhouse 27-12-2006, 05:42 PM Avo is correct, as it's there on mine (also O2) however RSS Feeds are missing on O2 phones, so it's possible this is an Orange customisation issue and Orange have removed TrackID functionality.

nadsta 31-12-2006, 04:02 PM Hi, I have a few to probems to add,
however I don't know how to find the firmware versions. If someone can tell me I'll add post them. The phone is a week old from Orange in the UK.
Battery is lasting about a day/day and a half despite 2 full charge/discharge cycles
USB charging doesn't do much-phone's charging icon moves but on disconnect the level can fall from 100% to 60% in seconds
Disc2 Phone software gives one of 2 errors after 50% of encode/transfer
"cannot process file 'xxx.mp3'.
1.Unable to open source file 'C:DOCUME~1\Myname\LOCALS~Temp\D2P_TEMP\Track name.mp3" THIS WAS ON PC SUITE 1.2.15 from SE www
2.Object reference not set to an instance of an object
THIS WAS ON PC SUITE 1.2.15 from CD
It has worked with one file, otherwise it just creates empty folders on the phones music drive
PHONE SPEAKER can buzz like crazy, making call almost inaudible-doesn't always happen tho'. sounds like a blown speaker but its intermittent. maybe a 3G prob?

Dreads 19-01-2007, 12:29 PM Hi,
Recently I bought a W950i and it's a cool phone and I'm very happy with it
but there is one thing that bugs me..
I'm using PC Suite 1.2.15. My PC, Win XP Home SP2, doesn't seem to detect
my phone when connected in "Normal mode" (Or phone mode or something
like that) via USB. Also m-router doesn't detect the phone.
All drivers "seem" to be installed properly and I've uninstalled and
re-installed the suite several times (I've got no third party firewall
running) but it still does not work...
I've also installed PC suite and m-router on a win 2000 PC of a friend of mine
and there it all works like a charm no probs there... I'm totally clueless what to do...
fadgadget 20-01-2007, 03:17 AM After pulling my hair out and nearly smashing the phone up i decided to phone se support.
The phone would connect to file manager using usb on the front off my desktop, but would not be recognised in disc2phone.
Anyway he tells me to always use the rear usb ports and bingo it works.
Whats the difference ?
So anyone suffering connection problems with usb maybe give this a try.
Had the w950i for 3 days and i hate it
Battery is useless even with task manager closing all programs
reception is poor compared to d900 or w810i
Using fone for a 40 min call and i could feel it heating up ? wtf !
crashes and hangs oh and the sony ericcson update service wont work !!
it gets as far as telling me not to touch the fone after releasing c button then hey presto it kicks me to the begining.
I like the control, weight, size and feel of the phone and the touchsceen with recognition is great but as for it being stable .....
Ive ordered tomtom6 nav cant wait to see how stressfull thats gonna be installing.
Give up smoking !!!! you must be joking.
how do you find out what firmware version for w950i
jog up * jog down and all that doesnt work im hoping i have an old version and all my worries will disappear with an update
fadgadget 20-01-2007, 04:53 AM Ok at last i got into the firmware
PDA CXC 162088 R1B01
PHONE CXC 162037 R9C001
BTOOTHCXC 162058 R3A01
CDA CDA 162014/2 R1B01
so i really do need that update, just tried again even turned my firewall off
reinstalled update service to no avail
it gets up to release c button then detecting in progress
the green block flashes acroos max 4 times then the box goes blank and im back at the begining.
ive formated the drive through the service option.
:frown:
anyhelp would be much appreciated

my phone when connected in "Normal mode" (Or phone mode or something

I ran update service and although there was no new update available
for my PC, Windows discovered new hardware and basically reinstalled the
drivers for my phone. The result of this is that m-router can detect my phone
now... PC suite 1.2.15 stil doesn't work in "normal" mode but hey at least I'm making progress :-)
I'll keep you posted...
Got exactly the same problem as most do - can use my phone in fast transfer mode, but normal mode (i.e. to back up the data) just doesnt get recognised!
Hopefully SE will realise theres a problem and get a fix sorted. How do i find out my firmware details please?

I've got the dutch version but it should be something like this
In standby view press/touch : more > status ( or something like that)
scroll down and there you have your firmware details...
owenfarrant 29-01-2007, 05:43 PM Hi All
I have just read through this thread with interest. I have just got a W950i on Orange in the UK. Great phone in theory but the software is very buggy. I have notice the following:
(1) Powers off whilst charging.
(2) Remote handset stops working and no control over the walkman.
(3) Attempt to make a call and phone some times locks up (battery out to reset).
(4) Locks up at other times (no apparent cause) and is only discovered when attempting to use.
(5) During a call the phone informed me that it was resetting to optimise performance.
Does anyone know if someone from Sony Ericsson monitors this forum or are we all ranting to the wrong people?.
In summary I think that this will be a great phone if they can get the software correct.

Another thing that seems a little sad is that you appear to have to go through the upgrade procedure to see if there a new version available. I would have thought that the PC software could monitor the SE website and let us know when we should connect our phones to update them.
Hopefully all the issues detailed in this forum will be addressed and we can all be happy with what should be an excellent phone.
Cheers

Skubbje 12-02-2007, 01:22 PM The last week i've been trying to convert avi 2 mp4 but it just won't play on my w950i.
I tried many diferent different formats but none of then seen 2 play
I use Xilisoft 3gp video converter.
I asked se support witch formats i could use, and i tried them all but the don't work. Does anybody have problems like mine? or knows to fix it?
Thanx
owenfarrant 16-02-2007, 01:13 PM Hi All
After posting a list of problems earlier in this thread I thought I would post again to say every issue has been resolved. I spoke to the customer service department at Orange and they replaced the handset. I have had this for a week or so and I am now very pleased with it.
I hope that this may help others.
Cheers

chinster 21-03-2007, 02:45 PM Being a triband phone is not related to ability to pick up a good signal.
I have same signal problem with my phone, as in its ok outside but as soon as you go into any building, theres no reception.
I live in Nottingham and phone is with Vodafone, I flashed it through SEUpdate earlier this week (CDA 162017/18 R4A01)
The thing is I tried selecting GSM only but I can't seem to pick up any network when it is selected.
Does anybody know if this is how it should be or if it should work with GSM only selected? Thanks
superswede 21-03-2007, 06:01 PM The phone should work with "GSM only" (it's the setting I'm using myself) but requires of course that there's GSM coverage in the area (would suprise me if there's 3G but not 2G/GSM).
- Sure you have the "network search setting" set to "Automatic"?
- Sure there ain't any limitations to your subscription at Vodafone (like "3G only...")? I would contact Vodafone first. If there aren't any limitations and the respons is that it should work you probably have a faulty device or old/faulty SIM card.

thanks for the help, I contacted Vodafone about the problem and it looks like there was a issue with registering on the network at regular intervals. They advised me to do a manual search for the network to force the registration. The phone is now picking up GSM signals when 3G is not available and can also select GSM only.

richardgnz 09-04-2007, 09:11 PM I have had this phone now for about three weeks and there are quite a few problems with it...
The clock gets out of synch by up to 15mins in just one week !
I cannot connect and use my bluetooth stereo headphones unless I power off the phone and power it back on first. Even if I had paired with it earlier - it just wont work. Works everytime on a fresh start.....
When listening to music using the motorola bluetooth (HT820) there is a 1/2 second pause about 8 seconds into each track. I guess there is the possibility that this could be my headphones but I would bet it is more to do with the bluetooth implementation.
When the phone is locked it randomly starts up the walkman and starts playing tracks when in my pocket - in three weeks this has happened on four occasions. If the phone is locked how can this happen?
Surely a firmware update can resolve these serious issues? Does anyone know when we can expect an update from Sony? Apart from all the problems I do love this phone and I hope the anticipated update will fix all these issues....
BTW: I am on monthly contract with Orange UK.

In the firmware you're using the phone lock does not apply to the "play/stop" button on the side of the phone, that's why...
The latest firmware (with organizer R6A16) resolves this issue. I don't know if it's available for any of the branded phones yet. It is available for the Generic World phones through SEUS. I believe that you have to "push" your network provider to get them to provide the latest firmware for their branded firmware package, not SE.
richardgnz 10-04-2007, 02:48 PM I just tried it and yes you are right if you hold the play button on the right hand side it will start playing the walkman even when locked.
Now call me old fashioned - but when I lock a phone I expect it to stay locked until I want to unlock it. But as you actually have to press the play button for as long as the unlock button then I guess this is a "feature" of the phone.
I much prefer the two button approach to lock/unlock a phone. Sitting in a meeting at work and the button gets pushed in your pocket can make an embarrsing moment when your music starts pumping out!
Thanks for the info ! I will now hound orange customer support on a daily basis with the knowledge that an update does exist that fixes some of our problems!

Discard my post. This issue is NOT resolved in the latest firmware. As richardgnz says, pushing the "play/stop" button for a couple of seconds will still start the music player even though the phone is locked.

it is not a bug!!! if you start the walkman app, and you leave it opened in task manager, the fact that even when phone is locked it can be started or ended is obviously thought exactly because in this way you do not have to unlock the phone if you want to turn on/off the music. close the Application if you do not want it to start unintentionally.
besides also the fact that by holding the play button for 3 seconds when locked starts the walkman app is made exaclty because in this way once again you can start listening to music without having to unlock the phone.
How many chances there are that you press unintentionally the play button for 3 seconds?!

I C you're point
richardgnz 11-04-2007, 08:23 AM Thats not entirely true.... If you hold the play button down when the phone is locked and the walkman app is not running (It is not listed in open programs in task manager) it will start the walkman and play your music.
But agreed - its not a bug - as I said before it does appear to be a "feature". I have managed to unlock my phone now on a few occasions and start the walkman on many more in a matter of three weeks - every time the phone was in my front pocket in the pouch....
Thats where I carry my phone and I bet where most people do as well. I think the one button lock/unlock system is flawed. That will not be changed in a firmware release so my solution is to leave the phone on silent.
Still love this phone though..... :)

Are you definitely closing programs down in task manager ? as in click the icon next to the battery level icon (looks like 2 opposing arrows)
Then click on open: all programs listed here are working programs that are using up memory. To close just highlight the program and click end
if you already know this I apologise worth a try
Jack88 29-05-2007, 02:44 PM I think I must have the most unusable W950i out there at the moment.
Once a FW update comes I'm hoping I'll be sorted - if not I'll have to send it back to be flashed but it's still amazing.

night_pz 24-09-2007, 01:45 AM Hello,
I have an Orange W950i debranded with latest generic firmware (R9GA001). The phone is pretty stable with it, no big problems or crushes at all!
But I want to ask you for solution to a small software bug in it. When I put the phone in "Fast file transfer mode" the icons of applications installed in the 4gb Memory disappear, which is normal. But when I unplug the cable the icons are all back in the "tools" menu even though I have previously moved them in other folders. Waiting to hear from you for solution.
vijaysg 31-10-2007, 12:12 PM Here's the Scenario:
I wanted to install Some Additional Fonts in My Phone. I put my phone in "Fast Mode" and I created a Folder "Fonts" under the Resource Folder in the 4GB External memory. I wanted to Copy Some Windows TTF fonts to the folder and So I opened the Explorer. This is where I think the problem started. I felt like changing the Memory Name of the phone and I changed it to "WXYZ" from "ABCD" and I went into the Above mentioned folder ie Resource\Fonts and tried copying the fonts which failed with the message "The Path is Too Deep". And the memory was not recognized and I kept getting the message Please insert disk into the drive.
So what I did was I switched the phone to "Normal Mode", Disconnected (Here again the external Memory was available in the standard SE File Explorer view) the phone and tried rebooting the same. The phone started Booting and Showed the Walkman symbol for 2-3 seconds and the screen flickered and reseted itself. This is going on continuously. Update to latest firmware is not helping and since I can't boot the phone I can't see the Firmware Version and such information for the phone.
I tried removing the SIM hoping that it would show up the setup screen, but that doesn't work.
Could Someone suggest what can be done to set this issue right?
ubicatigrova 05-11-2007, 03:39 PM Hello guys,
I have red all this problems but i could not see my problem, and my problem is this :
I have this phone like 4 months now and it is great, here and there few random bugs but nothing important.
But this is something that could get my phone smashed up, when i turn the radio on and change the radio station my phone is restarted due to better performance
and that is every time now. Fm was working just fine like 5 days before, and all I did is installed smartmovie 3.4 and put some new themes. After that, i tried to delete some of the themes but everything is the same. I didnt try to delete smartmovie because i had difficult time to install it.
here some more info:
Phone : CXC 162037 R9C001
Bluetooth : CXC 162058 R3A01
Organizer: CXC 162088 R1B01
i will try to perform master reset and to uninstall smartmovie to see if that changes something but i want Fm and smartmovie to work.
If somebody have some solution to my problems please help.
If I update firmware maybe ... ?

jammy123 03-01-2008, 12:06 AM Hi,
I recently purchased one unlocked w950i. I was able to copy files from my laptop to w950i using Fast File Transfer(cell working as storage device). Few files got transfered correctly. I was able to view them on my cell and few copied with Disc2Phone
After some time, I deleted those Disc2Phone files directly(in Windows) but in reality they are not getting deleted. D2P is not synchronizing the files also.
Now,whenever I try to delete them using cell, it is saying disk error. It is not even allowing me to format the media memory.
Guys, m in real trouble and please let me know what should I do.
superswede, I think u must be having the answer.

Pyogenesis 07-11-2008, 09:01 AM Hi,
The problem i have with my W950i is that I need to restart it all the time to be able to use it:
- I cannot make calls or receive anything
- the device doesn't recognize the headset when I plug it in
Everything goes back to normal after restart. It all appeared all of a sudden, nothing installed over the last period, except for your regular media files (mp3 players, moving mms files from one folder to another etc.).
What should I do?
