Hello all!

I have scoured the E61 manual on this one, to no effect.

I have a status icon (in the same area where the wifi four petal symbol appears), which is a shallow bow with an arrow pointing from inside the box straight upwards.

What on earth does it mean??

It means something is waiting to be sent in the Outbox of the Messaging app on your device.
