According to a review I read, dist lists are available for texting with the E51 but I cant find how to.
Was the review wrong or I need to be pointed to the right page in the manual?

Distribution lists on the E51 are called Teams. You can create a Team in the Menu > Office > Teams and use that interface to send a message to the whole group.

cant you just go onto contacts, press right on the dpad onto the groups tab?
