Actually, there were only ~1000 screens used for the presentation and altough there were some slight technical difficulties, not the slightest being that in one spot there were no running computers at all, it turned out pretty nice.
Megascreen was organized by Nokia & N-gage at Assembly, one of the worlds largest demoscene events, held annually @ Hartwall Arena, Helsinki

It's odd though: the official video talks about 975 computers, Nokia's PR said it was 3000 computers, and someone else posted on the story comments anonymously that it was 2000 computers.

Did anyone get an official count for the number involved?

It doesn't matter that much though, it still looks impressive however many screens were involved.

Yeah, you could tell there were some gaps in the "screen", but like you say it generally worked amazingly. The more complex images maybe got a bit distorted, but the monochrome ones looked very good indeed.

It must have been an incredible experience to see this in real life! :-)
