HTC Desire Z Anyone?

Just officially announced, possible competitor to the E7? Does have a SD card slot as it has no built in mass memory / 5mp camera / full slidey out QWERTY / Android 2.2

I was checking how long I had left on my contract as soon as I saw the Desire Z announced! Unfortunately I'm tied down for 6 months still, but I guess that gives time to see how the phone performs in the real world this time rather than jumping on it on release day...I have been waiting for HTC to release an Android phone with slide out QWERTY for months though :)

@Idle Mind -- Check that it has a 800 Mhz processor rather than the 1 GHZ used in the Desire... This is a newer snapdragon, but if the rumor about the gingerbird is true, then you might be stuck in 2.2 while older desire zoom past with 3.0 update...

Yeah, I too noticed it 'only' had a 800Mhz processor rather than the 1gb, wonder if this will make a significant difference. Does seem odd though that the Desire has an apparent faster processor than the Desire Z.

THis is the first Android phone with a QWERTY that appeals to me, the Motorola Milestone just looked too 'square'.

Having said that , the N8 and the proposed E7 'only' have a 680Mhz cpu unit.

The Desire Z also caught my eye. There's more competition for the QWERTY keyboard crowd. That's two phones that really pique my interest being announced in the same week.

Being in Canada, it'll probably be next spring or summer before they are available to me, so I'll have to wait. The only good part about waiting is that it gives time for them to work out the kinks first.

Looks good but what is the reason for the lower processor in this model?

Lowering the costs (bill of materials) -> better margins on sale of device -> higher profits.

Ordered mine

Got my pre-order in with mobilefun. They offer a '30 day No quibble moneyback guarantee' which is good as I'm not sure if I'm going to get on with Android and it gives me time to give the phone a good go before deciding whether to jump ship.

Its funny. I haven't too many problems with my N97 and would have given the E7 a go if it had a microSD slot....

BTW - The processor may 'only' be clocked at 800Mhz but as it has a built in GPU and so its supposed to have similar perfornance to the Desire but with a better battery consumption.

Going from Palm Pre & Desire to Nokia E7-00 :D

The Desire Z has a new version of the Snapdragon chip fabricated at 45nm...

"Low-power 45nm process technology for higher integration and performance"

It's also a system on a chip, with a very fast integrated GPU (i.e. 2 x faster than the Desire HD), and can be safely overclocked to 1Ghz according to the maker.

Running at 800Mhz was likely done to further optimise the battery life (which is helped by tge 45nm architecture), so in theory the Desire Z should give better battery life than the Desire HD, but a very similar end user experience.

I'll be looking at it closely when it arrives in October.
