Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian

176 replies · 205,753 views · Started 28 September 2007

Interesting. Id like to hear more if anyone knows about this, such as functions (speed cameras? POI alerts? traffic alerts? Etc).

The garmin site itself is a POS for info on that. Doesnt even say what version it is.

Im tempted to try it, but the garmin website dropdown lists lots of mobiles (including nokias) but not the 6110 (my phone) or the N95.

So Im a bit hesitant about it working with the integreated GPS just because that website says.

I might investigate more on Monday, if I get the time.

The most important links to download the application:

- Garmin Mobile XT Support Files software version 4.xx.xx as of July 11, 2007
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3493

- Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian S60 software version 4.10.20 as of June 21, 2007
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3651

- Garmin Mobile XT Free Basemap software version 4.xx.xx as of April 19, 2007
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3645

The most important statements:
- Provide support for Nokia E90, Nokia 6110 and Nokia N95 devices.
- This update does not add support for built-in GPS receivers.

Application works only with the original Garmin's GPS (Garmin Mobile™ 10 for smartphones)
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=9796.

There is a newer version of application available in Thailand Garmin web site,
but it doesn't support built-in GPS either.

There is no Garmin GPS proxy for Symbian available yet. :frown:

Mmm, I think I'll give it a miss. As much as Id like to review it for you people, it looks like it doesnt work with the internal.

Also, I cant see if it supports speed camera alerts. Its got POI, but it doesnt say anything about adding your own or being able to set distance warnings to POI either.

Although in theory, the new version of tomtom for symbian should be out this month or November.

So, does anyone want to try it? 😉

This is the convo I had with the guy from the store thats selling it, as slawmilcz originally posted.

Oh come on, some bugger must be willing to part with 50 rubs to give us a little demo?

Or at least contribute to my paypal account so I can!

You can always install all the stuff given in tthe links above and see how the application looks like, everything .... apart from GPS navigation 😉.
The user interface and graphics looks very well. 😊
It can also be seen in one of the links, which I provided in my previous posts.

BTW:
I didn't know that the version which supports internal GPS is already available in the market. It is stated in the web site:
"To be notified when this exciting new product becomes available, please enter your e-mail address and/or mobile phone number below and click on 'Submit'. We'll let you know for free by e-mail or SMS text message the moment it comes into stock."

Im not sure, I reckon navigon looks nicer to navigate by.

And yeah, I saw that and thought odd. Perhaps its not available yet, and he was just answering questions about it. :dontknow:

I might try it out. If it doesnt work with the internal GPS, they can damnwell take it back!

Contributions welcome!

I dont spose you know if it supports full postcode search? I forgot to ask him.

Got most the way through the order process, but it doesnt tell you about the product not being available. So...dunno.

I have got a copy of Garmin XT at such a good price, I had to buy it. It works very well, interface as good as Tomtom and the thing I like about, is that if you choose to go to a resturant, it gives you the full address and contact numbers too.

Just need to work out how to get speed camera database installed. Any ideas? In PIO menu it has the option enabled, but will not show them up.

Don't ask why, but i had the same problem until today.
But today suddenly GarminXT decided to warn me, but I haven't changed anything.
Maybe needs some days to think about whether should warn or not.

And yes, it works on my N95.

Greetings
Tom

Hi all,

I've just got this installed yesterday.

IT WORKS on the internal GPS!!

I have to say the user interface and usability is good as TOMTOM, and I can also add custom camera updates to it like TOMTOM. I've been waiting for something like this for ages, now finally its here!

I gave it a testing on my way to work this morning, the routing is fast, voice instructions is clear, I feel like i;m using tomtom!

R66 still kick A$$ !!

Try testing route 66 properly, on some different trip's ?
And u will see it dosent direct u 'the nearest way' to a point.
I always gets a longer route than nessecery.

And if u cant trust the soft when u are on unknown land, what good is it then?
(same deal with Navigon 6,35 😞 Only nokia maps and garmin xt does it proper)
Actually i hate to say it, but nokia maps is THE most precise i've tried yet 😮

Just my humble opinion

Cheers all

Hi

Has anyone tried this on the 8GB, is it easy to install as obviously you can't just slip in the sd card as they suggest on their site.

Cheers

Garry

Having used TomTom before, Garmin Mobile XT kills it with it's built-in GPS support as well as custom POIs, speed camera support, custom vehicle icons, and more.
Of course, living about 3 miles from Garmin's USA HQs pretty much guarantees the maps in my state are highly accurate as well. As far as built-in POIs, well this thing seems to have everything in it. The maps are DEFINATELY a lot more updated than the latest TomTom for Symbian. I've run both on my N95-1 (v20 firmware) and N95-3 (US HSDPA version) and Garmin Mobile XT displays newer roads than the latest TomTom.
Those of you waiting around for TomTom to support internal GPS chipsets in the latest Nokia phones, stop waiting and get Garmin Mobile XT instead.
Also, Garmin's Topo 2008 mapsource maps are compatible with Mobile XT as well.
In other words, you can carry not only road navigation but detailed topographical maps as well for those times when you're off-road or hiking. And yes, it can display both at the same time, but that gets pretty busy and on the N95-1 models tends to crash out so it's bestto select one map or the other depending on your needs at the time.
I cannot recommend the latest Garmin Mobile XT application highly enough.

And yes, it works on the N95 8GB.

Sorry, but I found it not as good. Restricted to one small memory card, missed instructions, and a very bad postcode database makes it suck for me.

About 4 or 5 bits on a 1 hour journey missing the voice instructions is unforgivable IMO.

The fact that the Europe map is 1.3Gb puts me off a bit. I am in the UK for 11 months of the year so it'd be better for me if it came in several files so I could just add the country I was going to when I needed it.

Can you give me a hint how to remove pictures that belong to Garmin Mobile XT not to be shown in galery .. it is very iritating
regards

You dont have to install 1.3gb of maps; You install mapsource onto your pc and then you can select what parts of europe you want to transfer over to your phone.

I had a play with Garmin today on a friend's N95, trying to navigate around Milton Keynes.

He was using the v9 maps, rather than the 2008 maps (which I have heard are only available in Europe form... err... "unofficially"?).

The map routing was fine, the interface nicer than Route66 (although it would be nice if it would be faster drawing the map), but the voice directions were terrible.

As people from the UK might know, MK has a fair few roundabouts and Garmin did a terrible job on them. Most of them are simple 4 way crossroad type but for almost all the "straight on" roundabouts, it said "turn left", despite the route shown on the display being correct.

I'm certainly not planning on buying this any time soon.

Route66 has been fine for me, except a couple of odd moments on the M1 between MK and London where while I'm following the route, it suddenly decides that there is no way for me to get to the destination.
