Please can you explain this a little further? I have a Vodaphone handset and assumed that the ability to use VOIP was removed - but your post seems to say that the ability is there but it's just that the application to use the system (SIP?) has been removed?

Also, what do you mean by taking a look at Fring if you want to use Skype? Aren't Skype and Fring juts two different versions of the same type of software?

Thanks 😊

I had no idea what Fring and Skype had in common, but being a Skype user I downloaded Fring anyway.
Go through the installation process and it asks do you want to connect with Google Talk, Skype etc. Selected Skype and entered my Skype user ID and password. Lo and behold my Skype contacts are available on my N95.....and it works. (unlike GPS and memory on video!!!!!!!!!)

Fantastic!

OK, I understand.

Just found out that the person who stis next to me has put Fring on his N95 and not only can you use Skype, you can also use MSN!

So, Fring is also a messenger solution 😊

yeah, fring is there to let you use Voip, google talk, and MSN chat/call. You cant MSN video call yet that Im aware of. They are looking at adding a few other things on too... in the future possibly as a premium add on rather than the free version.

Does anyone know (when using Fring) how to get the phone contacts to appear in First Name, Last Name format instead of it defaulting to Last Name, First Name. Also, is anyone having problems with their google talk contacts not showing up? My MSN contacts are there but not the google ones.
Thanks
D

Can any of you guys using this confirm the rumour that the application spams your contacts with ads for Fring?

It seems like a perfect Voip/Skype/MSN solution but I dont want to wind people up with my phone spamming ads at them all the time.

Video Messaging .. a pint to whoever finds the first Video over IP instant messager that works on the N95! 😃

Is it possible to download this onto the PC and install from there? My data charge is high on Virgin and I don't really want to download straight onto the phone.

so long as your phone contacts are set that way, Fring should pick them up the same way~? Unless this is a 3.07 (N95) issue?

Ive been using fring for a long time now, and none of my contacts have been spammed by Fring. What I will say tho is that it says on peoples skype clients that your CONNECTED BY FRING so more a form of advertsing for the software.

I have only seen one complaint about it in the fring forum where one person on an E65 I think said that it told his users that he was on Fring all the time... even if he was using Gtalk/Skypes own client. I dont know if thats a f ault with his fring or with his other client tho to be fair.

I can't find any reference on the Fring site to a PC download - the only thing it mentions is putting your phone number in and receiving an SMS to download. Am I looking in the wrong place? :con?

Thanks :icon14:

Fring is the only app I've installed by SMS / web link .. I've searched the phone for a trace of the download .. couldn't find it ..

Sorry you'll need to find an access point to grab it.

Sorry again .. I should have checked more carefully.
Its a worthwile install

No Probs. Going to my parents later and they have WIFI so I'll do it there.... or try the passthough connection thing I was reading about. :icon14:

So if i use this while in my wlan as access point, it will be completely free wont it (no data charge them either)

also, it will cost me data charge to recieve skype calls when using orange internet while on the move?

thanks, never had skype on phone, just came to n95 from a 6230

Using voice over IP (VOIP) services incurs its own charges separate from your mobile provider's charges.

VOIP uses a data connection to the internet (as opposed to normal voice connection). If you connect via WiFi then you are sending and receiving data via the internet service provider you are connected to via the WiFi router whether that's BT Interent, Virgin Media, Sky, etc, etc, etc.

There are sometimes costs associated with using VOIP services such as Skype and TruVoice. For example, if you want to call a normal landline or mobile via such a service then normally there's a set charge per minute and you'll need to preload your account with credit first. However, if you connect to someone's own VOIP account (Skype to Skype for example) then usually that's free.

TruVoice currently has a promotion running allowing free calls to landlines in many European countries for a few weeks before the per minute charge kicks in.

hello its good know you guys are having fun with fring, but im not having the same joy 😞 , every time i try to make a call with skype on my n95 using fring it starts dialing then makes a wierd noise and my phone reeboots??? weird would anyone know what this is???

where have you installed Fring? I had some probs when I had it on my MMC, with connecting etc. but its ok from my phone memory.

Anyone have success with Skype on Fring? Whenever I try to make a call it shows the Skype logo, then says terminated. This is on wi-fi. But it shows my contacts.

doctorzee .. I have no trouble either .. I'm using fring in the Czech Republic .. I only have to remember to exit the utility when I'm done .. otherwise T-mobile keep charging me.

Cause it is still Beta, and u cannot use it in every country.
Beside, its still not updated since April 18, 2008. So still the same bugs inside

hmmm, bugs? Hmm, there is no bugs at all.
I'm using it almost every day, no problem. Only for calling you need better connectivity.

Seems you don't use Skype so often.
Biggest Bug: it doesn't use Wi-Fi for making Skype-Out calls
I am not sure whether u have a data plan, but every Skype client (Linux, Windows, PDA) uses an internet connection, so only Skype charges for Skype-Out calls.
For the mobile, u have a GPRS connection to your provider + Skype Charges.
Second, as mentioned before, the service is only in a few countries available, whih means the following features are missing in some countries
Skype-to-Skype Calls
Skype-Chats
So all the advantages what u have from Skype on your PC are missing.

I call this a huge bug
