Scouting for Symbian-powered bargains: 2010 edition

In these times of recession, it's more vital than ever to watch your pounds (or Euros) - if you need (or lust after) a new(ish) Symbian-powered smartphone then why not think of getting something second-hand, on eBay, at a fraction of the new price? Or if you're trying to raise cash by reducing your smartphone stash that's been gathering dust under the desk, then read on for some comments and example selling prices as at the end of June 2010.

Read on in the full article.

"The 1997 flagship now down at almost pocket money prices." I know that the N95 is an old model, but I guess it is rather from 2007 then 1997.

I think you can add the N97 Mini to the list, the new price is 299 at Nokia, and most sell on ebay for around the 160-170 mark, still a good saving over new.

But if you can live without the hardware keyboard, the 5800 is the biggest bargain on ebay, arguably I'd say it's still the best of the touch screen Nokia's, especially on the latest firmware.
Symbian Phone History: 7650, P800, P900, N-Gage, 7610, 6630, 6680, N70 x 3, N80, 5500, N95, N95 8GB, E51, N82, E71, 5800x5, E75, N97, E52, N97 Mini, N8 Currently using: a busted E71 (as a voip phone)

Just chucking this in there, i just sold my X6 (32gb) on flea bay. While there i added up and averaged the selling price of several different X6's. Came to 214. Though it might be useful to know.

grabbed a n85 the other day for 80 pounds off ebay , needed a new housing though which was an asy fix , approx 8 screws and your into the guts :-)

one things about older phones is genuine parts are getting harder to find

you should allways watch out for the insurance scam as well ie people selling contract handsets then reporting them lost so you end up with a brick and they get a nice new shiny replacement , less likely to happend on older phones but with 18 month contracts and 24 month contracts knocking about you still hve to be carefull

lots of bargains to be had though

be carefull with the i8910 though parts are rarer then a world cup winning england team

good article steve mate

Good work Steve. I've bought four phones off ebay now and not regretted it. I picked up an N82 a year ago for 100 - what a bargain. Got caught out a bit with my E71 in that it was locked - the description the seller gave was not comprehensive shall we say - but ultimately that was my fault.

The beauty of articles like this is in the expert summary of the devices a year or two or three after they came out. The dust has settled and the verdict is nearly always spot on.

There's a huge benefit in not dealing with phones that have been released too early. I fancied being an early adopter of the N8 but I reckon I won't - it's too likely that this won't work or that won't work and then everyone's going ballistic on AAS in the comments. The firmware for these second hand devices is usually mature.

great list

Definitely a good selection. Buying via ebay be prepared for weak batteries and various smaller problems, typically difficult to notice or quantify (like `there is a tiny dark spot on every photo' or 'roughly once per weak my e90 resets when I type an e-mail' or 'phone works well on edge and 3g but gets very hot and sometimes resets on 3.5g' ).

Still, taking into account current crop of s60 phones, I would never buy a new phone.

@Steve I am really happy that you omitted e51 and promote instead n96, n86, n95 8gb and n95

Great article Steve!
I just got a Nokia 6120 Classic for 15, absolute steal!
Followed your "Pimping the Nokia N82" article (as they're based on the same feature pack) and now have a fantastic workhorse of a device.

Steve I recommend you recommend to people they check if its not firmware locked e.g. im stuck on v20 on my N86 because Orange have not and will not authorise any further updates. So I think people need to start being aware of this when buying phones even if they are unlocked.

I wonder if the Google Nexus 1 will actually increase in value as a collectors item now Google have decided to drop the whole idea. LOL! What a failure. I remember people on here calling it the king of everything. LOL!

The N82 was the closest any phone ever came to being a sought after used product.
