Nokia N86 8MP, why no 720p

While still image quality keeps improving, why are we always stuck with 640x480 VGA video?

I think we've been at this resolution now since the 3MP N80, probably long before.

Why cant Nokia begin to up the video resolution?

Yes, with 8MP, the resolution support for 720P is there. However with the cpu; its possible that 720p decoding and encoding - very cpu intensive - is the holdup; along with possibility of an N93 true video recorder and industry camera king could debut in 2010! Along with marketing of social video contents, full potential of Share on Ovi and video movie recording tips from the likes of Spike Lee & the actor from Dracula 1996 (I forgot his name) - both previously used in Video campaigns by Nokia; could be the reason.

new cpu deals with Broadcom, Qualcomm, ST, TI for newer more advanced ARM-11/9 Cortex A8 cpu's for end of 2009/2010 with SMP support via hardware & Symbian (already there) could mean we'll get our wish soon enough.

Samsung are going to beat Nokia in the race to the first hi def phone. They have recently announced a Samsung Omnia HD.

Trying to make a choice between the Samsung Omnia HD or the N86. Was impressed with the original Omnia but didnt like Windows Mobile. Much happier with the build quality and reliability of Samsung phones over the Nokia Nseries handsets too.

Think its going to be the Omnia HD as its Symbian, Samsung, and 720p
