waste of a button

is it just me or is the pencil button on the keypad totally pointless when the hash key does exactly the same function.

surely nokia could have assigned some kind of shortcut function to it??????

As I know you can hold this pencil button and use the mid scroll key to copy and paste the text.

And, surprise-surprise, what they key does is, ta-daa, actually also documented in the User's Guide.

E.g., for the 7610, see page 48 in the User's Guide, "Copying text to the clipboard."

For a relatively complex, feature-rich (is that a real word?) device, there are probably many other things you don't know yet, but which the User's Guide explains.

That's all right. It doesn't have the most captivating plot-line, but reading it would give you more insight on what you can really do with the phone (if they are not obvious - everything isn't - by just using it).

It would also save other people from spending time explaining things that already have been explained in the guide.

Perhaps you should, at least, download the PDF version of the guide, and when you wonder about something, search it first and if you don't find the instructions/help you're looking for, only then post a question?

Good grief, read the manual or at least check it for these basic functions :P. I find the pencil button is a real good one to assign as the 'hot key' for third party apps.

LOL, nope this one is not in the manual . It depends on the app. For example Multiclipboard lets you assign it in the settings. Most of the symbianware stuff allows for hotkeys.

MARK using PENCIL

Hi!...

PENCIL itīs very helpful to MARK many message on inbox (sms, mms, emails, etc.) on every LIST that you find on any app, like documents, and CONTACTS LIST... you simply hold the pencil KEY and push the Central Joystick/pad Button and you will CHECK the item ... then you can make some function like add to group... or Delete all the checked items... etc... And the Copy/Paste for any text on any field on any app it does holding the pencil button ...

Like you can see.. Pencil itīs a useful button...

cya!

In my 6110 when i went to new sms input, i had the dictionary on, and when i was about to enter a new contact name it was off. Now in my 7610 it stays on or off regardless of what i want to do. I need it on when entering the text of sms, and off when entering new contact names. anyway of doing this?

Something is wrong with your setup. When I goto pick a contact, dictionary is off and multitap is on.
