i always leave mobilemail paused in the background on my E61, but press and
hold the *red* button to stop the 3G connection once i've downloaded any
new mail. it's just a case of holding down the menu button, select mobilemail,
and resume.

i'll be changing to a N95 8GB next week and know that i can use the above method
with that phone too.

tbh, i'm not the most heavy of phone users anyway, i just like to be able to
read my emails during the course of the day without resorting to using webmail
apps or waiting to logon back at home.
