N96 = Epic Fail

I bought my N96 yesterday on a new orange contract, so far it's been a 100% complete disapointment.

I cannot even get it to work with PC Suite (Language packs not there) and the phone is constantly asking me to connect to the internet for no reason.

When I plug the phone into the USB, instead of getting the choice of Pc Suite/Mass storage etc I get it asking me to connect to the internet, after which it mentions something about a drive being unavailable.

I've done a hard reset *#7370# on the phone and the bugs still continue to riddle the phone making it unsusable (with a basic phone as all of the shipped software has been deleted)

I cannot get any software updates even though I was told this was a non-branded phone.

My initial feelings are this may be the least stable symbian phone i've owned to date (Upon release) and i've owned A LOT of symbian phones in my time.

Huge disappointment!

i too am finding the frequency of crashes increasing as i use more features of the phone - which is kinda to be expected.

but i really am not that happy that I've spent 549 to beta test a phone.

J2theIZZO, I've had the same problem as you... it was only after a lot of handbanging with the phone that i realised that i had mistakenly created a remote network drive with no connection setting. As soon as I deleted the remote network drive, it stopped asking for an internet connection!

Epic Fail! Blimey...

Its been said many times before, it just doesnt seem to offer a whole new experience over the N95... just more memory (and better looks?)

Sorry its not working for you tho... thats a killer. Just looking at getting a load of them for work!

I agree 100%
theres alot to like but its not ready for market yet.
i suspect a good 6-10 months before the firmware is mature enough.

this may be an issue with the N85 too?
also the 5800, which is probably why they are not launching it in demanding markets until next year. live beta testing.

I'm going to make this into a rolling list of gripes.

Yesterday I wanted to view something on the web whilst out and about (read as in the pub), I had my E90 and my N96 with me.

I decided to give the N96 a go first, pages took ages to load and after about 15 mins i'd gone from a full charge to 1 bar with the "battery low" message up.

E90, pages loaded in a few seconds and had no effect on battery....Hmmmm

Also I encountered 3 crashes/restarts yesterday (Nokia logo up and phone restarts)

erm its physically impossible for it to be quicker than the N95 as it has a lower CPU speed. but makes up for it with hardware based video/audio codecs.

which is why its battery lasts well.

all 3g phoens suffer battery drain on 3g esp when on a low 3G signal.

how much have you been actually using the phone in anger
always my crashes were while doing something
pulling in email/watching a video/ taking a photo

the mp3 player seems to always quit while taking a photo or looking at large webpages etc.

theres pluses and minus to the N96

but whatever you think - i seriously doubt the N85 is a great white knight
its likely to suffer from the same software issues. all of which will be fixed in time
hopefully quicker.

I have said that on another forum, since the N85 is running the same OS - S60 V3 with FP2, its likely to have a lot of the same problems. Unfortunatly (or fortunatly for N85 buyers), the early N96 adaopters are beta testing and nokia are finding out the bugs.

So in theory, the N85 shouldnt be as buggy when released.

Although I havent heard of the N78 having too many problems, and thats running the N series S60 V3 FP2.

i think alot of N96 issues come from it using a totally new hardware platform
N78/N85 are based on the same chipsets/architecture as the N95/N82/N73 etc.

but future n series will be the N96 platform.

well thats what i understand in a totally not really understanding way

Not so. N78, N85 are more related to N81, 3520.

And they're different from N73.

And N82, N95, N95 8GB, E90 are different.

And N96 is different from all of the above. And there are no other devices using the same hardware.

Compare the processor and network radio info on http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/matrix_all_1.html for different models, if you want to figure out these relationships better.

My biggest problem with the phone is the ungodly slowness of it.

I'm going to make a youtube video tonight and post a topic on it. Surely I cannot be the only one who has this issue.

I mean sometimes it can take nearly 35 seconds to open a text message and a further 40 seconds for it to load the reply screen.

I mean seriously What the Fuck.

same firmware as you and i've had some problems... but not slowness ones.

mainly crashes and freezings every so often, but not slowness in things like opening a text message.
