TVCatchUp now works for Symbian (in the UK)

Thanks to a heads-up, we've learned that TV CatchUp, a free, on-demand all-channels system for UK residents, is now working with Symbian OS and Web. It's a public beta, so expect a few things not to work properly. Point Web at, sign up for a new account, and away you go. Some setup screenshots below, to whet your appetite.

Read on in the full article.

I get to the HQ / LQ selection, then the stream never connects on BBC1 or ITV1 (most important channels for the World Cup!) on both N79 ver WiFi and 5230 over cellular network...

Thanks for the tip, but it looks more like an alpha at the moment.

I don't know what's going on with you guys, but it's working great for me!

Now I'll be able to watch the World Cup on the go. Thanks for the heads-up, Steve and David!

Tvcatchup won't work :(

Noticed this on Twitter today, managed to create an account after several attempts (error 503,) servers must have been under strain. Now tried over wifi and 3g (on vodafone) and can only stream sound ! Video 'can't display' don't know if it's the server or my reliable old N97 !! Shame looks like a good service, but lack of video turns it into radio :(

TV Catchup have made a brief response to the lawsuit.

The timing of ITV's response would be tragic if it weren't so hysterical, but we can't really comment here I'm afraid
So it does not sound like the are worried.

Works well on N95 Classic, or at least it does except for BBC1 where it can't connect but then plays sound but no pictures.

Not working on my 5800 over wifi. Gives error ,essage then plays audio only. Shame, got excited there, lets hope the issues are ironed out in the near future!

Sound but no picture, looks like a codec problem.

E71, Tmobile on Broadband Max.

I am sorry, I just switched to an HTC Legend - and that after being a 5-year Symbian loyalist (and still am today, for some reason).

The thing is:

1) Everything on Symbian is slow, clunky and jerky. Apps take ages to load, and then stutter and abort. I think in this case Nokia is to blame, who established a trend of third-class hardware to support their Symbian devices and therefore hampered it in a big way. By comparison, the HTC Legend seems to be on another planet.

2) AAS has been the only place where I got to learn about possibility to watch WC matches on Symbian sets. By contrast, I have been reminded through 10 websites and RSS feeds where and how I can see the same on Android sets. The extremely biased tech press is to blame, but you can't deny that by the time many sites started to display a semblance of objectivity, Symbian has fallen so behind competitors that even reviewers who want to like it can't pretend anymore.

3) Symbian^3 looks all set to be a butt of jokes (the interface is jerky even in promo videos), and N8 will be a success solely because of its stunning and world-beating video hardware.

All this just makes me sad. I wonder if anyone at Nokia or Symbian is listening, and for the first time in years, I am forced to think that while Nokia is responsible for taking Symbian to its current world domination, it is perhaps Nokia (due to steadfast commitment to providing below par memory and CPU to its flagship sets, as well as dogged following of some outdated interface conventions) that is now bringing it down.

Tried again at home on my i8910. Works flawlessly. Wondefully clear picture and no blotches or buffering. Really nice to have this 'app'.

However, Wife's N97 mini only got the dreaded "unable to play clip" and sound only. Hopefully this will get sorted.
