Ovi Maps 3.04 (3.4) improves performance, adds Qype

Nokia has released an update, version 3.04, for Ovi Maps. The new version adds formal support for WiFi as a positioning method as part of an overhaul of the positioning functionality, plus significant performance improvements for search, zooming and map panning, a number of consumer-friendly UI tweaks and the addition of Qype information to the places database. Read on for more details.

Read on in the full article.

Every time there is an Ovi Maps upgrade I have the same dilemma - is it worth several MB of memory over the build in the firmware version? And now with version 3 Ovi Maps became twice the size - 9 MB. Why is that - is it programmed in qt?

I have tried to use Ovi Maps 3.03 (previous version to this), and have to say I am not very impressed on the route calculation. In fact, it took me 4 miles out of my way, to get to a place that was only 1 mile away from me, and I could even see a sign on the road on how to get there ... but I though I would give Ovi Maps a chance ..... but it was awful

I actually found that Garmin XT gave much better routing, and took me direct to the location.

Does this version have better routing.

Has anyone else found this with Ovi Maps?

My n97 mini keeps restarting every time I try to use this. I even tried uninstalling the previous version (3.03) and then installing 3.04, but am facing the same issue.

Anyone have any idea what should I do???

Lightbulb suggestion

Is the map loader the only way to download the country/city maps to your phone? It would be great if one can download the maps directly from the Ovi store itself, like have another tab for Navigation, and have the same functionality of the map loader (choosing the continent, then country, then city).

Poi

you know, my biggest complain on Ovi Maps 3.03 (besides the poor GPS precision on my N97) was the lack of POIs for Brasil (where I live). But now with 3.04 they added one service for Brasil, Apontador (www.apontador.com.br) and we now have a lot of good POIs available. This is great. if they could only fix my GPS antena...

You are lucky! I know the answer. Turn of wifi positioning. It still does not work on my N97 mini either! But after unchecking the wifi positioning method everything worked like a charm.

Yep, I second tenoce's suggestion. It was a well-known problem in 3.04 beta, it's a shame the bug made it to the official release.

I also switch off network positioning because I'd rather be told that it hasn't yet worked out where I am rather than being (in)accurate to 1,500 metres.

Still a great app though

Cool ovi maps

I recently bought an n97 from the mymall shopping centre in cyprus. i have had so many problems with the mapping system that i took it back to the shop. these phone companies should take the rest of us into consideration too when developing software.
