FlipSilent beta 1.0...

Came across this little app I'd thought I'd share with everyone...

Not too sure how Samir feels about this app, as it seems to be a very close knockoff of his Shutup idea/concept. TBH dont even know who came up with the idea first... so will reserve judgment till then...

Still a bit of friendly competition between freeware developers cant hurt as long as appropriate acknowledgment is given...

So kudos to Tong Ren of symbianblog.

see link for more details:

I'm sure Samir wasn't the first to think this was a good idea so it's not suprising someone else with the skills to make it also thought of it. I wouldn't assume it's a rip off necessarily.
As you say competition is always good for consumers/end users. I have emailed to request a copy so will let you know my thoughts.

I've requested a copy as well. Let's see what this Japanese-alternative-to-Samir is like

- Both: Do both mentioned above DEFAULT
2, Flip Back:

- Silent profile: remain in the silent profile
- Standard profile: use the standard profile
3, Auto Start
- No: start without the phone boot

Hi all,

Wasn't this functionality first shown in the demonstration concept video for the Touch UI, so really neither of them invented it but have merely worked on delivering the functionality it demonstrated.

I signed and installed it fine. When I run the app and it gives me the options which I left as defaults.
I have just tested it and it works exactly as described, flip the phone over it kills the incoming call and switches to silent. Turn it back over and it changes to whatever profile was selected before.
It also works when there is no incoming call (phone is idle) and just switches to silent. I am going to test that a bit because I am concerned it may accidentally do that when in a pocket or bag.
Power-wise it doesn't cause any noticable spike in energy profiler when I start it or flip the phone so thats good.

It could be improved by allowing you to select which profile when flipping over and back (it only allows silent or general at the moment) and perhaps a shortcut to enable and disable it. There is a bug too so the silent only option in the settings doesn't work and it will still end the call.

By the way, the author has now changed his distribution method from email requests only to download (I'm guessing due to popularity). The unsigned version is downloadable here: http://symbianblog.com/wordpress/wp-...lipsilent1.sis

yeah, its a tidy app...

seems to only flip between profiles at zero - 10 degrees and 170-180 degrees which should be spot on..

Yeah, I've just been playing with that and it does seem to only activate at the extremeties so it's ideal. If the settings bug is fixed and the profile selection and missd call logging are implemented it'll be pretty much perfect.

I've just drove down to the greasy cafe, phpne in pocket... and when I got back, took it out and put it on the desk and it reactivated the profile, so at some point its clearly gone to silent.

Im guessing that if its in the pocket and you sit, it goes to a pretty close to horizontal position... therefore possibly going to silent. I guess I'll have to make sure its face upp in the pocket?

I guess it's catch 22. It has to have some point at which it detects flippage so there is the inevitable possibility that it will 'fall' into that position. There isn't much you can do about that except have an activate/deactivate shortcut but if you remembered to do that, you would remember to switch to silent in the first place!

yeah... tis true.

Probably the easiest thing would be to be allowed to change the profiles it swaps between instead??

Dont get me wrong, Im not complaining... just making an observation whilst shoving a bacon sarnie down me throat.

This has been updated to 1.01 already! It now only mutes the call, doesn't change profile.
