WIFI doesn't auto-stop in N97

qierd proble (I think it started after I updated Nokia Messaging)
using SW ver 2.1
once I start an app with internet access, the wifi or 3G internet pops into action.
the trouble is , that it doesn't stop once I close the app.
I can still see data flowing in the connection manager, endlessly.

how can I fix it ? (I don't see any open app in the task manager, so no idea who is actually using the net)

The data doesn't "flow" endlessly. It eventually will time-out.

There may also be any live home screen widgets which periodically use the datastream as well as the Download applet which you cannot do anything about.

If you want an easy way to stop the data--press and hold the red "end-call" button. It will prompt you if you really want to disconnect.

If you want to see what all is using the data stream...

Settings->Connectivity->Connection manager->{whatever connection(s) is active}, then scroll to the bottom of the status display screen which tells you the stats on your data sent/received and you will see what all applications are using the connection.

Typically it will say:

Downloads
WidgetUI

I have also seen:

{unknown}

Of course if you kill your WiFi it may bring up your 3G and vice-versa.

checked, and it's not the reason... still a mystery

If .. say Facebook is on, I see the downloads and gui widget thingy in the bottom of the connectivity manager report.

However, I killed the facebook app (in taskmanager only Home Screen shows up).
it connectivity manager now, I see no app list in the bottom at all.
and yet, my phone is still downloading bytes (around 6MB so far) and sending them in and out of the void.
for the past 40 minutes....

This is a similar problem to the continuous web connection even when you Go Offline on the NM 10.2 (N97 2.1), and exit. I have my home WAP setup and it continues to connect to it, it doesn't even ask. I manually disconnect then it just connects right back up again. Only way to stop is to turn the phone off and on again.
