Beer I'm starting to think that ...

a Hard reset BEFORE doing the firmware upgrade is a good idea.

Then at least you're upgrading from a known point.

It wont do any harm but performing a hard reset before a FW upgrade is a waste of time.

If you get any problems after the FW upgade simply format the internal memory with *#7370#

I recently made my phone Orangeless by making backup, changing code, and reflashing with Nokia's latest firmware.

I didn't put the code back but I restored my backup but did not select the restore settings option as I thought that might mess things up since it's a different version.

It worked fine for all three N95's in our household.

Not sure if this is useful.

PMitchell - No offence taken but I was really just going from the instructions I had followed detailed elsewhere and have reflashed 4 N95's from (with full restore's) in the last week without any problems whatsoever.

Having debranded and upgraded many a phone over the years, I find that the simplest method is to change the code, uninstall any user installed apps, do a back up of the phone memory to your computer, NOT the memory card, flash the phone, restore the backup from your computer and then reinstall your apps. As long as you do it this way, you can simply restore your backup without buggering about with the product code. Many people mistakenly believe that changing the product code back will hide the fact they tampered with it in case of warranty claims. This is an old wives tale. Once you make the first change to the phones PC, it is forever marked as such. It's like a seal over a screw. Once it's undone, you can't reseal it. Any Nokia engineer will be able to tell, so why bother ?

It takes a while to reinstall stuff if you have shed loads on there, but trust me, you will not have ANY problems.

I did have a similar issue with my N73 where I got the "Phone start-up failed. Contact the retailer." error message, but it had nothing to do with the update process. It was ultimately cured by reformatting the memory card....

Anyway, good luck
