N80 and WLAN/WIFI reach/strength

Hi,

is it just mine or does the N80 have very low WLAN reach??

When I search for WLAN's at a specific range from the Wireless router
I manage to get 17% strength on my N80, and at the same location
I get 39% on my fathers Nokia 9300i on one Wireless net, and 31%
on my N80 and 85% on the 9300i on another net..
(Using Psiloc Hotspot finder on both)

One net on the N9300i has 35% and is not even found by my N80..

This is very very dissapointing!!

Also I am experiencing problems keeping a stable connection to any
WLAN. First I my set up that WLAN, and when I try to connect it
sometimes does not find that WLAN even though I know the WLAN
is present. Then I turn off the phone and back on, and now I find
the WLAN, but sometimes again when I try to connect to the
"found" WLAN I get a message, "Could not connect" "Wlan not found",
"error code -30180" something...

Also sometimes when I am nearby a WLAN net the N80 does not
even bother to search, it says looking for available "Access Points",
and when/if it does not find the WLAN I Know is present, I try
to hit "Search for WLAN", then it just searches for 0.00001 milliseconds
and says no WLAN found... It doesn't even bother to search properly
in other words.. This has to be a software issue.. When using
Psiloc Hotspot finder I can find the WLAN net not found when using
the phones embedded WLAN system.

The WLAN reach on my N80 is so annoyingly weak/low, that I can't
help thinking that it must be something wrong. But then again my
cousin also complains about low WLAN reach on his brand new N80.

If the WLAN strength is gonna be the same on the upcoming N95,
I won't even bother spending my cash on it..

And when is there gonna be a REAL FW update for the N80 the takes
care of all of the issues!!!? E.g. the memory handling issue when
surfing the net.. Almosy always get memory full message!!

And yes, I have the (sofar) lates FW V4.023.0.41

Wireless lan strenght on the N80 is basically crap, its been discussed here before several times, there is a way to up the strenght to 100% (but you probably already have this),

My wreless is also crap, and I have noticed since upgrading to 4 firmware that its harder to find my home network than before the upgrade (and other networks I use regularly), and there is deffinately some instabillity in the connection which I didnt have before with V3 firmware, so I think there is a problem there somewhere in the new firmware ..

If there is a way to adjust the crappy WLAN strength on the N80 as you are
indicating, please advise me!!

I am trying to search the forums here, but can not find anything about it..

My wireless Lan is very impressive. I can connect to my router from upstairs in my bedroom and also pick up neighbours through extremly thick walls and marble floors. I think its fine the WiFi.

To change the wifi power go to settinds-wlan settings-Options advanced settings-Then change the auto confin to disabled- then change TX power to 100mW.

These settings should not be changed as they are already set to maximum strenght, and these settings are normally changed to increase batery life.

My wifi range is terrible too but seems to work everywhere i need it.

Thank you, found the settings, it was allready at maxium 100mW, tried to switch off power saving, but still no improvement....

I can understand that the N80 can not compete with a PC/Laptop, but being
so much weaker than the Nokia 9300i I find strange, and very dissapointing!!

Well, if the N95 has the same conditions I may be forced to think differently.

are we talking on the phone here? i cant find the wlan settings! i am going to settings (in tools) and the options i have are phone, call, connection, time+date, security, call divert, call baring, network, and enhancement.

or do i access settings from elsewhere? (eg the conn manager)

You need to go Tool, Settings, Connection, Wireless Lan, options, Advanced Settings [press yes to continue], Disable Automatic config, scroll down to TX power level and change the value. The default seems to be 100mW (the max) so it probably won't help.

My range is crap, but how do you know how strong it is? Messus - you state that yours was at 17% but how did you know?

thanks Ive got it now.

note also there is apowersave option furtherdown! -turning that off may help?

for signal strength:
-con manager -availiable networks -(select network) shows the strength as a %age, i think psiloc hotspot finder does also.

I have found that my signal strength needs to be at the very least 45% to even get a connection, let alone a stable connection

I seem to have really good wifi access like James761 ... from my house, I can reach 3 other wireless networks all in semis. Lowest % is about 45%... no worries here on FW v.3. As for my bluetooth....

it may help to point ur n80 at its right, ie the camera button is facing the wifi source more or less. as the antenna is there. i find that helping a lottttt.

Yup you've hit the nail on the head. N80 wifi reception strength is basically totally governed by where your hand is covering the phone. As you say, the antenna is under the camera button so if you hold the phone right handed normally your palm will cover this and totally block the signal. I regularly cannot pick up any signals then i take my hand away and voila, they appear again. So, so annoying. I instinctively hold it left handed now when i use the net, which is a nightmare for typing.

anyone with signal strength problems should try this!0i cannot emphasize enough how much of a difference this makes, especially if the signal is weak.
