Any apps like Sony's TrackID?

Sony's TrackID app for walkman phones lets you record a short sample of a song via the phones mic then connect to the internet to find out what the title and artist are etc

all for free (minus data costs)

Are there any similar apps for the N95?

track id- hope you have fun

The new and amazing TrackID-feature on Sony Ericsson Walkman phones have now been created in a JAVA-version, too. Of course, it's not official, but it works like magic!

Here's how you do:

1. Use the phone feature 'Record sound', any song from any FM radio, NOT your built-in radio.
2. Record for at least 10-15 seconds. The file will have .amr extension. It's automatically saved in Music folder.
3. Open Track ID. Browse to folder e--Music--your recording.amr. Folder E: is your Memory Stick.
4. Click Select
5. Allow to send to the net? Yes.
6. TrackID processes the .amr file. You'll see log, flush, open Audio Streaming, etc.
7. If successful, the app will ask you to launch your web browser

The TrackID analyzes audio from recorded music from the phone and then submits that audio sample to the TrackID service. The Gracenote service compares a "musical fingerprint" generated from the audio sample against an enormous database of fingerprints containing 2.5 million songs which covers the global music market. The fingerprint is matched and the listener is sent the song name and artist info.

Hope this is what you want.

Or even better, use Shazam iD. It's a native Symbian application and will do the recording and analysis all in one place. The site says it's a trial service free for a limit period of time, but I've been using it for nearly half a year now and nothing has changed yet. Free apart from the data charge of course, but the fingerprinting is done on the handset so only minimal amount of data is transfered (few KB).

Just follow the instructions on the page to download and install it.

Awesome. I used to use the old shazam service (phone 2580 and hold the phone up to the speaker) but it became less effective and more expensive so I stopped using it.
This seems like a very cool option.

EDIT: Been playing with this yesterday and today and it is very good indeed. Seems to find matches straight away, very low data usage so it's quick (ideal for pub quizzes!) It is also free and can be used on the internal FM radio!

Not as quick as shazam ID , I guarantee. Also, not so hot if the tune has few or no lyrics or they are foreign or hard to make out.

Sorry to blow dust off an old thread, but I'm intrigued by Shazam. I've looked on the net and there are many places that say that it's free for 30 days but then costs £2 a month... yet randomfan has reported using it for free for at least 6 months.

randomfan: are you still getting it free?

Anyone: if it's going to cost anyway, are there any decent free options out there?

Note: I understand I would be charged for sending/receiving data on my phone... that's fine.

I hazzard a guess if you get the program by sending text to get it. After the trial period it would be £2 month premim text.
Thats just lookin at it of course, dunno if thats 100% right.
