Question N80: Orange firmware, Generic Firmware or N80ie Generic Firmware?

Hi,

Sorry to post again but a more interesting and specific question to my needs.

Will upgrading from Orange N80 firmware to either Generic N80 firmware or Generic N80ie firmware make a difference to the speed and functionality of my N80?

The smooth usage is more of an issue to me than using VoIP.

If anyone has experience of upgrading an Orange N80 to Generic firmware i'd be interested in hearing the differences (if there are any)?

Thanks for the advice,
Alex

PS. I forgot who it was in my last poll but whoever posted the link about VoIP, please could you do so again. I really want to read about it but didnt think before I deleted the post.

check out http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum...ad.php?t=56244 for calling out on VOIP option.

but yeah, your Orange specific question can be edited into your top question here probably

It really just comes down to how much you like to fiddle with technology or if you have some specific desire. Like you say, if you only have wifi in the flat and your not there much then its gonna be costly for you touse VOIP over your netwrok GSM charge unless you have a dataplan.

If you like I can try and make you not upgrade and someone else can play the 'you should upgrade bit' Im sure Cash will play the devils advocate !

<<<< how prepared am I today!!

although I should really edit my copied text as it doesnt really make sense now! *blah*

From what I hear there is not a speed issue between orange and generic firmware, but many people dont like all the crao that comes with network phones, not just orange.

When I buy a computer for example, the first thing I do is to reinstall a fresh copy of windows xp to get a computer without all the manufacturers crap on it because I have never really used any of that stuff...I like on my phone and computer the things that I wish, not the things that are forced onto me.

as for upgrading to the N80ie, as mentioned before there is really only one reason to do this if you boil it down to basics...and thats if you want to use VOIP, if you dont want to use this...then dont upgrade...its a simple choice.

Just to add, my N80 was orange branded, and I flashed mine to standared Generic N80 firmware, and I can honestly say I`ve not had a single problem with it. Generic also enables the FOTA option as this is not available with the orange firmware.

I've been debating for the last 24hrs. think i might go straight for the N80ie firmware!

Slightly worried about not being able to go back to the orange v4 firmware, but im gonna take a note of all the settings etc.. then go for it i think!

Will let everyone know the difference (if any) when I have tho.

last 24hrs!! HAHAHAH, I think the sign that you have shown interest in the N80ie version meant you were bound to upgrade to it sooner rather than later!

Good point!

I think i have an Achilles Heel for updating my gadgets to have the latest firmware, software etc...

I suppose its gonna happen sooner or later! Especially if i get a wiff of it making the phone work better!

Your 6th!!!!

How have you managed that?

Do you just keep getting a new one on the insurance?

Is that just from updating the firmware?

You've put me off now! haha

Dont be put off.. I bought my N80 last April 2006, and updated the firmware myself with phoenix each time a new firmware was released (about 4 times I think now), and I have never had a problem with the phone, or any of the upgrades I made....as long as you do your research read everything 3 or 4 times so you know exactly what you are doing, and ask as much advice as you can before you start the flashing process you should be ok ..

Good luck, it also seems that if you do brick your phone, repeated attempts to reflash will bring it back to life ..

HAHAAH yeah, although I only bricked 1!

bascailly tho, I had one the day it came out... it sucked, it took it back, got a replacement, that sucked too.. took that back, 3rd one had the screen issue and a problem with 3G so I made a real noise in the shop and they gave me one to get me away from all the customers!

4th was insurance.
5th was the one I bricked.
6th is my nice shiney... brand new when I got it, and manually upgraded thanks to ALLABOUTSYMBIAN users N80IE

EDIT>> So yeah... don't be put off. If the worse comes to the worse, theres a chance you can fix it yourself with the help here or just send it back!

Cash,

I was just reading your NSS guide in the N80-N80i thread and you say to use the '0543922' phone code, but this is not listed in the list at the bottom, there it says; "0539363 EURO 1 Pearl Black Internet Edition"

Which one do you think i should use, i've just got a orange UK regular silver phone?

Thanks for the advice
