Hudson Soft's N-Gage entry in their long-running maze-action franchise, following Bomberman through eight themed worlds — each with four stages plus a boss — on a quest to recover a stolen Golden Statue from Bomberman City. The presentation is 3D cut-scenes over a traditional 2D top-down grid, consistent with the 16-bit Bomberman formula.
Despite Bomberman's reputation as a multiplayer game, the N-Gage version's Bluetooth support was limited to two players across five dedicated battle arenas — a significant step back from the four-player modes available in home console versions of the era. The game included Louie mounts (rideable creatures found in eggs that grant extra abilities), a staple of the Saturn and Super Nintendo Bomberman titles. Hudson Soft had initially hinted at full 3D gameplay in pre-release materials, which concerned series purists; the final product retained the classic top-down grid, which was broadly welcomed. Reception was muted — the game attracted little critical coverage on N-Gage — with the most-noted complaint being imprecise collision detection making enemy evasion frustratingly unreliable.
