A 2D tag-team fighting game developed by Hudson Soft for the N-Gage, based on the Game Boy Advance title The King of Fighters EX2: Howling Blood. It features 21 playable characters from the KOF roster — including Terry Bogard, Kyo Kusanagi, and Iori Yagami — in three-on-three elimination bouts, with Bluetooth wireless versus play.
KOF Extreme was a translation of the GBA title The King of Fighters EX2: Howling Blood, itself a standalone Hudson-developed spinoff derived from KOF 2000 rather than a direct console port. The GBA original had received strong reviews — GameSpot named it its best GBA game of January 2004, giving it 8.5/10. The N-Gage version preserved the responsive controls and sharp sprite artwork but suffered a consistently sluggish frame rate that GameSpot described as seriously hurting the experience; the GBA game ran more smoothly despite lesser hardware. It remained, however, one of the very few dedicated 2D fighting games on the platform, and fan reviews on sites such as Neoseeker were considerably kinder than the press, praising the character selection and solid gameplay mechanics. The game launched in January 2005, near the end of the N-Gage classic's commercial life.
