Ovi Gaming Review:
Phone Used For Review - Nokia N97 (games may be different on different phone models)
Gameplay - Pocket Chef is very similar to Taito's Cooking Mama (also available on Ovi Store), being a series of mini-games that let you prepare and cook ingredients to make a particular dish. There are lots of recipes to choose from, and completing all the recipes in a particular section unlocks a new section full of new recipes. The actions in each mini-game are extremely simple, things like chopping vegetables or stirring sauces. Unlike Cooking Mama, Pocket Chef doesn't use gestures very much, and in general uses the touchscreen rather poorly. Most of the time you feel that they've written a non-touch game and just bolted on some crude touch-compatibility.
Graphics - Pocket Chef's graphics are very detailed illustrations with simple animations. Some of the graphics is too detailed though, with important touch-based functions hidden in tiny areas of the screen (for example placing the apple slices on their outlines is virtually impossible because you can't see the very thin outlines properly).
Sound - Some MIDI music for the title screen and digital sound samples for things like chopping vegetables.
Multiplayer & Online - None.
Overall - Cooking Mama on Ovi Store looked great and had some nice simple touch-based gameplay but it ended too quickly. Pocket Chef has a LOT more gameplay, with 33 recipes against Cooking Mama's three. However, Pocket Chef's touchscreen interface is worse, though of course if you have a non-touch phone you won't notice this. On the whole, Pocket Chef is a reasonable but quirky alternative to Cooking Mama.
Score - 55%
