Ovi Gaming Review:

Phone Used For Review - Nokia N95 (games may be different on different phone models)

Gameplay - Puzzle Quest is a bizarre but clever mixture of puzzle game and consoleish retro RPG, where a Bejeweled-style puzzle game forms the main combat mechanism. You can use the puzzle to attack your enemies directly (by matching skulls) or you can try to collect colours that build up to allow particular magic spells to be cast. Combos are also important as they buy you time to collect more colours or locate more skulls. There's a heck of a lot more to the game too including the usual levelling up, wandering monsters, side-quests etc as well as various bonus stages where you try to learn new spells or collect potions. The game world has a map which you unlock as you progress through the storyline, and there's a choice of eight characters to play as.

Graphics - Nice 16-bit era anime artwork with bright colourful effects for spells cast during the main gameplay.

Sound - As with the graphics, the sound is very much in keeping with a 16-bit RPG featuring a bright MIDI soundtrack and sound effects for the spells being cast.

Multiplayer & Online - None.

Overall - Wow, what a makeover. This reviewer is a bit bored of Bejeweled-clones (and the original Bejeweled is pretty dull too), but Puzzle Quest manages to breathe totally new life into the genre by placing the puzzles in a challenging and exciting context. By building a combat and magic system around the colours in the puzzles, every move is significant to the game and it makes it a lot more exciting to play. Definitely recommended.

Score - 80%
