Ovi Gaming Review:

Phone Used For Review - Nokia N97 (games may be different on different phone models)

Gameplay - Sonic Unleashed for mobile phones uses a similar concept to its console cousins: it starts out as a normal 2D Sonic game but then transforms into a primitive beat-em-up/fighter. At the beginning you can play Sonic just like on the original Mega Drive games, and this is really good fun (albeit a bit jerky) as you can dash around the level trying to explore every nook and cranny. However, he soon transforms into "werehog" and the gameplay then becomes very dull indeed as you have to punch and destroy the enemies before you can progress. It's a rather poor marriage of two different genres which doesn't really work.

Graphics - Sonic going back to 2D graphics is a good thing, it's where he has always been at his best, and it's nice to see the game running at full resolution even on the 640x360 screen of the N97. However, as is usual from Gameloft, the game engine isn't very fast and there's a lot of lag whenever Sonic attains a high speed. This doesn't affect the gameplay too much on the beat-em-up sections though, but it ruins the overall slickness.

Sound - Short dull MIDI tunes with digital sound effects. What happened to all the memorable MIDI music that the Sonic games used to be famous for? Couldn't we at least have some of the classic themes reused?

Multiplayer & Online - None.

Overall - If anyone from Sega is reading this: stop messing around with Sonic! We love the original games, so do some more of those! Sonic Unleashed's central idea of Sonic as a violent monster simply doesn't work on any format. It's telling that most of the complaints about the console version of the game can be equally applied to the mobile version, despite using a totally different game engine and level designs.

Score - 55%
