Q. How can I find out whether there's a newer version of the operating system for my Sony Ericsson P900? I know it supports user updating but I can't see a list of versions anywhere on the web.

A. The situation is complicated slightly by different network operators having their own builds and versions, each with the basic UIQ interface and Symbian Operating System but with extra network-specific tweaks on top. Luckily, Sony Ericsson make it easy to check, if you know where to look.

Go online to www.sonyericsson.com and choose 'Support', then 'Sony Ericsson Update Service'. On your P900, in the main applications screen, use the menu command 'System information' and advance right by two pages, to show the 'CDA' number of your device, typically around eight digits long. This number includes information on the network your software version was designed for (if any) and you'll need to type this number into the form on the Support page. The Sony Ericsson Update Service then displays the most recent 'organiser' version, which you can compare to the version name shown on the CDA screen on your P900. There's also usually a helpful link to the 'Release notes' for this version, so that you can get an idea of what's changed/fixed.
