How can I send email, as well as receive it, over GPRS?

Q. I've just started using a Symbian-based smartphone with a Vodafone Pay As You Go SIM card, but I'm having problems with sending email. I'm able to collect email perfectly but when I try and reply and get errors every time. Any ideas?

A. We're guessing that you're using GPRS to get online. The most likely error is that you're still trying to use your desktop ISP's SMTP server to send email. To help deter spammers, most ISPs only let you use their SMTP server when you're actually logged in through their network. In this case your phone network provider is also (effectively) your ISP, so you have to use their outgoing mail server. For example, if you use Vodafone GPRS, you'd have to use 'smtp.vizzavi.co.uk'.

On a UIQ smartphone, go into 'Control panel | Connections | Messaging accounts | Edit | Outbox' and enter the new server details into 'Outgoing server address'. On a Series 80 device, use 'Messaging | Tools | Accounts'. On a S60 smartphone, go into 'Messaging | Settings'.

For other UK phone networks, ask their support departments for the appropriate SMTP server name.
