My P800's sound is faulty and ring tones and caller audio don't work properly

Q. After months of faultless service, my Sony Ericsson P800 has started failing me. Incoming calls now sound the wrong ring tune (a custom WAV file of mine) and sometimes I can’t hear the caller and they can’t hear me. Everything’s set correctly in ‘Control panel’, so I’m at a loss. Do I need to send it in for repair?

A. The most likely cause of the problem is simply that the normally solid Symbian operating system has got itself confused. Just like Windows on your desktop, if the programs running in memory get corrupted or clash in some way, you’ll need to reboot the unit, clearing out its RAM and starting again. Because of the nature of a PDA phone like the P800, our guess is that it’s been ‘on’ for months and never properly switched off. Don’t worry, you won’t lose any data, just power off the P800 completely, wait a few seconds and then power it on again. Now try calling it and check the correct ring WAV file is used.
