My P910 freezes at the startup screen, how can I get it working again?

Q. My P910i has frozen on me. After inputting my PIN, the device freezes while still showing the startup screen. I've tried resetting, obviously, to no avail. The only thing of note was that I'd installed half a dozen shareware utilities a couple of days before.

A. Quite a few UIQ utilities register themselves to 'auto-start' when the device is booted. It sounds like two or more of those that you installed don't like each other very much. Normally I'd say to remove utilities until things start working again (thus discovering the culprit), but in your case you can't even finish booting. First of all, try booting without your Memory Stick Duo in place. If you'd installed a rogue program to this, the removal of the card should let the device boot OK.

If the problem's still there, it's time to make use of the built-in 'Service menu'. Take out the P910i's SIM card and restart the device. After a few seconds, it'll pause to tell you that there's 'No SIM card'. Now do the following keypresses: 'Jog-Up', '*', 'Jog-Down', 'Jog-Down', '*', 'Jog-Down', '*'. You should now see the Service menu pop up. Choose '3 Service functions' and then choose '2 Yes' to format your internal disk.

Once formatted, you can restore your P910i from your last good backup and then you're back in business. You may also need to resynchronise with Outlook to gain your most recent PIM entries. And this time, be careful how many new applications you put on at once. It's always a good idea to both backup before installing something new (especially a utility, which may interact with the Operating System at a low level) and to stop and check things are working after each installation. In addition, it's sometimes a good idea to install utilities that you're 'not sure about' to the expansion card, so that you can get them physically out of the way in case of this sort of trouble.
