The Nokia Creative N8 Photo Awards

Enough of me wittering on about how good the Nokia N8's camera is - have a look at the first set of Nokia Creative N8 Photo Awards, hosted by James Burland. Culled from almost 500 of the top camera phone photographers in the world, the top entries (one of which is linked/demoed below) in the December 2010 awards really show what the N8's Carl Zeiss-lensed, 12mp, large sensored camera can do.

The Nokia N8 User Group on Flickr was up and running long before the N8 was even available to purchase. The other Nokia device Flickr user groups, such as the Nokia N95 User Group, have proved to be extremely popular, but the N8 User Group is looking like it might eclipse them all. In just a few short months the group has gained 456 members sharing 2,851 photos, many of which are simply superb examples of smartphone photography.

The Nokia Creative N8 Photo Awards is my way of making the public aware of the full capability of the Nokia N8’s camera. But more than that, I hope it serves as inspiration to those that have an N8 of their own, encouraging them to treat their N8 as a seriously capable camera in its own right. This first N8 Photo Award is a testament to the entire Nokia N8 development team. Right from the start the focus was to produce images that represent reality without unnatural sharpening, edge enhancement and colour rendition. Is there any doubt that they achieved that goal?

With so much of the Northern hemisphere covered in snow for the last couple of months, it’s no surprise that the group features many spectacular snow scenes. I picked the overall winning photo, a snow scene, mostly because of the purity of the colour and the interesting perspective. Many congratulations to William for being the very first winner of the Nokia Creative N8 Photo Awards.
