I will be passing through Heathrow shortly and I want to buy an N8 from the Nokia shop there (if it still exists!) These days, what are my chances of getting an N8 with the dreaded purple screen fault?
I ask this, because where I live and work (Baku, Azerbaijan, see you next year Ewan!) the N8's in the shops that I've checked all have the purple screen issue, and the local Nokia repair centre was unable to fix an N8 that I'd bought, telling me that there's nothing wrong with it, look, they're all like that!!
safe to purchase n8?
Can't answer you question about that specific shop but I purchased four N8 units from Nokia's online shop and NONE of them had the purple screen problem.
The above user is very lucky i have bought many n8s and swapped many n8s at stores and all have had the purple screen since january/febuary that i have bought/seen.
i have easily had over 10 n8s go through my own hands all with the tint problem and poor gradients of colours .
You may be lucky and get one without it but i would say that there is a very very high chance you will get one with the problem .
Nokia have even swapped my screens over with ones that still had purple tint and left dust under my screen glass.
my money is on you getting one with a purple tint mate
I wonder if my good fortune has been due to all four N8 units being orange colour?
Hmm....I bought a black N8 on the 1st day of Gitex expo in Dubai the day the N8 was released last year, and that phone was faultless. However, I changed it out for an orange one in March, and that's when the purple screen issues started!
I'm hoping that the silver ones in Heathrow T5 are fault-free, and I'll try and get the 'grey blocks' test jpeg demo-ed on it before I buy!
Hey now wait just a minute!
With all four N8s that have passed through my hands I have found the display and colour to be excellent. When a black screen is displayed it looks black, photo colour reproduction looks accurate and there's no sign of a purple tint anywhere.
For this reason I've never bothered to try the graduated black images on my N8 screens...until now.
Guess what, my two week old N8 shows purple blocks on this image: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/img/blacktest.png
:frown:
I am now wiping this knowledge from my brain and inserting a subconscious aversion block to prevent me from reading any thread containing the words "N8" and "purple" ever again.

Oh boy....really, so sorry!!
Generally you don't notice the purple tint and blocky dark transitions in day to day use.....but I use the phone for watching video, and the purple/blocky transitions make that unbearable.
ahhh AAS, sometimes, its just too much information 😉 Block it out!!
I would suggest to go on a new Noikia with Win 😉
