I'm wondering if it would be possible to acces the data stored on a portable external hard drive on an iPad by connecting the hard drive to my N8 by USB on the go and then connecting the iPad to the N8 by wireless?

I don't think Symbian has a file explorer enabled to do that... maybe developing an app you could do something similar cause all you said is very probable...
It would probably be easier to jailbreak the iPad then plug the HD into the iPad Camera Connection Kit.
