Late last year, I refused to buy a camera, and bought an N8. As long as either I or my wife had the N8, our family would always have a decent camera at our disposal.
Fast forward to today, and after growing tired of the frequency of Nokia's restructuring announcements vastly outpacing their software updates, I have an iPhone 4 and I can't pry my wife away from her Nexus S.
I desperately want one of us to have this phone, the camera is just too good, and plus I don't want to buy a dedicated camera for actually taking decent pics. I was kind of hoping my wife wouldn't like the Nexus S and we could sell it and get an iPad 😊. Now the N8 is on the chopping block, instead.
I want to be able to switch between the iPhone 4 and N8 as I figure out if I can put up with its limitations (the iPhone has proven incredibly useful for work and school- if not for that, I'd probably just go with the N8 and be done with it) enough to keep it for its ridiculously amazing camera. However, Nokia says don't put a micro-SIM or micro-SIM adapter in it.
Is anybody out there switching between an iPhone 4 and N8? If so, what specific brand of adapter are you using? I'm sure several micro-SIM adapters will get stuck in an n8. But maybe there's a few that are not.
Can you position the micro-SIM in the N8's slot such that the pins connect, while still being able to get it out? How hard is this, if it is even possible?
Google has turned up mostly useless on this subject, with some folks saying, "yeah I use a micro-SIM with the N8" with no details on their adapter, a few saying their broke their N8's doing this, and most just parroting Nokia's stance.
Thanks!
I think I remember use of micro sim adapters being discussed on the Phone Show Chat (http://stevelitchfield.com/sshow/chat.html) and that Tim Salmon (http://timsalmon.blogspot.com/) had tried several Can't recall whether he had got his N8 or C7 at the time but might be worth contacting him.
Hi, I have been using a micro Sim with an adapter in a Nokia N8 and other phones for a year. I bought it on eBay
Greetings! I have a similar dilemma, and have mostly lived with the results. I carry an iPhone much of the time, but also have an N8 and other Nokias. I use a microSIM adapter I picked up on eBay --- it was about US$3.00, including shipping, if I recall.
To be honest, the N8 with the microSIM adapter is finicky --- you can get it in pretty easily, but sometimes it sticks a little getting out and you have to be really patient. Part of it is the SIM mechanism in the N8 itself, I think; I just don't seem to have the fingernails to get it to eject, and find myself (even with a regular SIM) frequently resorting to all kinds of evil objects like bent paperclips to push on the SIM or microSIM adapter to trigger the ejection mechanism.
In short, it's doable, but I don't like doing it. Ironically, the N8 is the phone I would like to do it most often with --- the camera, same thinking as yours. But I have the nagging fear that someday I'm going to end up with an N8 that's eaten my microSIM for good!
But I'd say that if you're just a little careful and just a little patient, you can certainly make it work. And nearly every other device I've used with the adapter has been a better experience, so I'm glad in general that I've got the adapter in the first place.
Thanks for the replies, everyone!
For those of you who bought your adapter on eBay, it doesn't happen to be this one, does it?

This came recommended by a coworker as being a very high quality adapter, and just from looking at the description and video, it seems to have the traits that would be important to making sure it worked well with the N8- ie, everything is tight and secure, almost like the whole package was a real SIM.
That may be what I got... can't remember anymore. But it does look promising!
