These are some educated guesses of what we will be able to play in our p800 in the near future I dont know any insider information about any projects, but with some common sense and whilde speculations this is what you get.
Containers
.ASF .ASX .AVI - Movie, sound.
Windows media containers, will take some more time as Mircosoft prol dont want their main competitor to decode their files.
.OGG .OGM - Movies, sound. http://www.vorbis.com
Ogg (the container) will prol both be supported in a player as both of them are open source and have some documentation. Ogm s can contain mpeg4 files (and other formats) separate text stream and most common sound formats. A great combination for p800 movies.
.MPG .DAT
mpeg 1 or the VCD format vill prol get support as there are some linux decoders around. The format is however not suitable for PDAs/p800 since the compression isnt good compared to mpeg4
.RM .RAM
Real media/streaming.
RM has ported players to similar devices and will most likely port to the p800 as well. The format is a mpeg4 derivate and pretty good. The Real player isnt very well liked by most windows users, but on a stable platform things might be different.
Formats
DivX Mpeg4 video
DivX3.11 and divx 4-5 I can only guess as both are closed, but at least has some interest in spreading to other platforms, and 3.11 decoding can is possible trough divx5 http://www.divx.com/
Xvid mpeg4 video
Xvid is open source and will be ported, its just a matter of when, not if. http://www.xvid.org
Mp3 Sound
Mp3 is pretty well known by now, shouldnt take that long for other decoders.
Ac3 - DVD sound
No open decoders, and very much overkill for handheld devices at this time will not be supported in a long time.
Vorbis (ogg) Sound.
Vorbis, the sound part of the ogg container format.. that unfortunately got named .ogg in windows will be supported with .ogg and ogm as its in the same project and its open.. another when and not if.
There are of course other formats, but these cover most of the standard dvd rip formats and combinations.
