Beginner's guide to formating ?

28 replies · 6,929 views · Started 10 April 2003

I've seen several posts about reformatting the 92xx & have want to know a bit more. Like how to do it & why & when would you want to do it.

Also, I read about removing the .ini files. Why would you want to do that ?
I mean, don't .ini files tell the system what to do ? Or does the system rewrite them from afresh ?

Any hints & advise for someone who's totally in the dark ?

thanks

Translation: "yeah, I'd like to know that as well"

Butt Serious 😮 :

I'm new with formatting and deleting files as well, and since this is not mentioned in the manual, CAN somebody give us stupid boys a short guide?

it`s a promise for tonight, even if 2morrow somebody will have to delete it 😉 or do the spelling...Chivas Quenn visited me again 😉 hehehe....sprite spirit 😉 18years old 😮ops:

Yes, I`ll try to do it.

And to be Honest, even after almost a Year together with my 9210, I am still a beginer. We all are.....

You can Format your device by pressing the CTRL+SHIFT+F right after restarting your 9210, when you see the startup logo with Shaking Hands.

!!!!!IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!

Always do a backup of your data from 92x0 to MMC or PC BEFORE FORMATTING THE DEVICE. In this way, you can restore whatever you want....

!!!!!IMPORTANT!!!!!!

It is recommended thatyou install the needed sis files separateley, not using all_nokia***_data.sys files.

It might take longer to install the files separateley, but you will install only what you use.
i.e. I do not use Fax and WAP,so I don`t need them...

What you will get? Almost 3Mb free memory(or even better) speaking of a 9210 😉

What is most recommended? A PC-USB MMC Card reader- price is about 20-30 USD now!!!!! In this way you`ll be able to transfer from your CD to your MMC the sis files, and save time. Also you can copy diferent backups of your 92x0, like "Best 64MMC", or "Games MMC". or even "Trial Apps MMC"

Remember!!! Always beckup your 92x0 before formatting....

I use to format also the MMC and the 92X0 and after that start putting apps on them...

I created a folder, called Fresh Installed 92x0, and that is a backup of a fresh formated 92x0 with the vital apps I use only...Clean, Fresh...as name say.....

Tip:

If you are using Outlook, do the backup after sync with outlook. In this way you can win +60 minutes needed for contacts.
(Or save contacts.cdb)

The rest of the tips can be filled up by the rest of you 😉

And use search function

:robot:

Most of them can be found on nokia.com but some have to be put back from a backup. Check the forum and you'll find a user who offered to create sis files for those apps.

If you have problems restoring a specific app from backup post it here and I'll try to list the files needed for that app.

Why people delete only the ini files? Sometimes those ini files can be corrupted or just hold to much information which could slow down your communicator. The ini delete shorcut is usefull if you need your communicator back fast. Still I prefer a format.

Agan I agree...it is better to start up with a fresh 9210...It's worth the work! 😉

This is scheduled to be covered in section 7.2 of the Alternative Nokia 9210 Guide. Unfortunately, this has so far only reached section 5. The index is here:

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/support/nokia92x0/index.php

If someone was prepared to write the definitive formarring guide, it would be a major bonus to a lot of users out here. If section 2.2 "Contents of all memory card data and contents of all nokia 9210 data" could also be updated to cover v5.54 / 6.00, that would be pretty damn useful as well - it might help sort out the questions about "missing" individual sis files.

I know it's a chunk of work for one of the few who know enough to write it, but it would also save a lot of posting.

I cant find the seperate .sis files from the allnokiadata.sis for the 9210i V. 5.34

Can some kind person please leave a direct link to these or mail me them at wanny1zone.mywap.genie.co.uk

TIA

i cant format my MMC, i always recieve a message like "NOTE: In Use" 😞 can you please help me out i really badly need to format my MMC...

thank you.

it helps to first remove the mmc (and so make all programs using the mmc stop or crash)
and then retry the format ...

Hi There

I apologise in advance if this has been asked already, there are a fair amount of threads to search for an answer.
Will I be able to install V5.34 software on my 9210 after a full format?

thanks

Yeah, watch out that you install the correct version of sw that is needed on your device...!!! :P

Thanks

I did actually try, it gives an error of not enough space on disk, I put it on a freshly formatted MMC

PS: If I install individual .sis instead of the "all_nokia. . ." would that work?
😉

Yeah, many ppl here (and me too) have tryed installing everything individually (you save a lot of space!!)...but in the package softwares there are some files that u can't have individually!! So you have an incomplete install because you lack many functions!!!

I have just put the CBS554.sis and FileManager554.sis on my 9210 ver 4.13, they both seem to work fine!
:P

hey all thanks for helping me out on this problem i had which was that i was getting a message "not found" whenevr i open any application in my 9210 communicator..
and i swear the formatting steps which was discussed here really works out for the fruit if u remove all application prior to the formatting...
thanks all of you "god father","gaz cart" etc............
and LAURA you are really lucky !!!!
