Using GPRS with IR modem and Win XP

13 replies · 3,259 views · Started 10 April 2003

Hi,

Can anyone advise on setting up Windows XP to use GPRS via IR (on Orange UK) ?? I've tried using the DUN Wizard, but on the odd occasion it actually finds the phone it refuses to install the IR modem on anything else than COM1 😞

I'm assuming that it's possible to use GPRS via IR rather than bog-standard 9k6, but I'm scratching my head as to how...

TIA, Tim

If you want to install the P800 IR modem on XP first remove the previous installation of the P800 IR modem. Now, if you let the P800 and the laptop make a connection over IR, XP should automatically install it as a Standard Modem over IR.

Ok, for GPRS this MIGHT work!

Make a new connection in WinXP, but don't set anything yet

The number you should dial is *99***1#

Leave all the other settings blank (usernamem, keyword, DNS, everything)

Make sure you have connected and selected the modem you need (the P800, I guess that is "Standard modem over IR"😉

Now try to dial-in

It works with me, good luck....

I've been trying to get this working myself - although not from a laptop, but from my iPaq, so that I can browse the 'net with O2's unrestricted GPRS connection..

But I'll be darned if I can get it working!

I have three GPRS setups on my P800 - O2 Internet, O2 GPRS and O2 MMS. I've set the preferred service for everything to O2 Internet (which breaks MMS, but then I never use it anyway), and browsing the web on the phone itself works fine..

But setting up a DUN connection using 'Bluetooth Modem' on the iPaq, and telling it to dial *99***1# simply results in...

nothing..

at all..

The bluetooth connection comes up on the phone, but it never initiates a GPRS connection - and if the GPRS connection is already active, it doesn't transfer any data across it when the iPaq requests a page..

Anyone have any ideas on this one? I've been searching for info for weeks now to no avail..

Thanks,
Aaron

I finally spoke to Ericsson tech support, and they've given me a solution for using GPRS with XP. Search the forum for the topic title "GPRS modem - solution for XP and Orange", and there's blow-by-blow details there.

😃

I have the following problem. I set the telephone to "modem" mode and enable infrared. When near the PC, the PC infrared is activated an Windows XP recognise the phone as "Standard Modem over IR link".
The problem starts when I use SE dial-up wizard, which cannot detect
any phone as modem! I see that the COM port corresponding to the
infrared port is disabled. When I try to enable, I get a message that
the OS suuports IrSockets and therefore all IrComm ports will be disbaled. Similar problems occur with Vodafone's Connect PC: although the software can detect the "Standard Modem over IR link" no connection can be made!

Thanks for any help.

The excellent Vodafone suport here in Greece has given the solution. It was amazing: I have sent them an email yesterday night and when I came to my office this morning they had already sent the settings in order to set up "a dial-up connection" using GPRS. Win XP had no problem using the "Stabdard IR modem". Great :fadein:

i did what you said Delta737 but the connection says that it couldn't assign ip from server so what ip should i write and should i connect grps on the phone before i connect to the modem on pc.
thankyou

Well, I'm sorry medhat, this just what worked for me. The ip should be found automatically (from your provider).

You don't have to connect GPRS on the phone first.

Good luck with getting the right settings. Perhaps you should check the website of your provider. I'm on the Dutch "KPN", and they have the settings on the website. It was hard to find, but it was there. Once again, good luck

hi,
Delta737 can you please give me the address of the dutch kpn web site
thankyou

www.kpn.com

But you have to speak Dutch to understand it (and to find where you're looking for)....

Hi medhat,

The same problem with me, I receive an error message - server did not assign dynamic IP. Please keep me in touch if you manage it.

Thanks,
Dorin

1) Clear out any pre-existing Ericsson or IR modems from the Modems tab
in Phone & Modem Options (Start, Control Panel, Phone & Modem Options)

2) On P800, switch IR to modem (Control Panel/Connections/Infrared) and
set it On

3) Bring the phone in range of the IR eye, and let XP find it and
install the Standard Modem over IR Link driver.

4) Once it's been installed, open up it's properties dialogue (as step
1) and select the Advanced tab

5) Enter the following into the Extra Initialization commands box:
AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet"
Replace the "orangeinternet" with whatever the address of your provider
is (Control Panel/Internet Accounts/Edit/Advanced/Address)

6) Close the dialogue, add a new connection in Network Connections using
the Standard Modem over IR Link. Leave username and password blank, and
enter *99# as the number

7) Dial, and watch your GPRS bill rack up...
