YAMQ - Yet Another MMC Question

As a total newbie, can you explain a few things about MMC for 9210i:

1) Can I buy ANY MMC or do Nokia's MMC have something special in them?

2) Can I just put the MMC in the 9210i and start installing on it? Or do I have to do anything to make the phone "recognize" the card? format the card?

3) When I use PC-Suite to install, will I be shown an option as where to install? Without an MMC it just installs on C:

4) What can I install on the MMC, and more important what should i NOT install on MMC?

Thanks

OK, in order:

1) Yup, you can buy any brand. Nokia cards are just pre-formatted. Someone in another current thread recommended making sure they have a warranty. Personally, I've actually accidentally laundered a couple of my MMCs with no ill effects, but I was probably lucky...

2) Just stick it in your phone & format it before putting anything on it. It may not even be necessary, but wouldn't hurt.

3) I take it that you're using some version of Windows on your PC... Normally, when you double-click on the .SIS icon on your PC, it'll start the installation process. At some point, usually about halfway through, the installer will ask you to which drive you want to install the application on the Communicator. Just select D: to put it on the card. There are a few utils I've come across that don't do this, but in almost all cases, you get to choose.

One final word of advice: if you're getting a 64 or 128Mb MMC, I strongly suggest that you get yourself some sort of MMC card reader/writer for your PC (whether it's USB, PC Card, whatever). They're cheap these days, & it makes moving over to a new card MUCH easier & quicker. If you just copy everything from your old card onto your PC hard drive & then just copy it all onto the new card, all the previously-installed apps should run OK as well once you put the new card in your phone. Plus, it's a much faster way to do a backup than trying to rely on a serial or IR link.

1. You can buy any MMC as long as it is MMC not SD card
AFAIK there is no difference between nokia mmc and other mmc

2. the card will be be recognise after you put it in. You don't have to format the card but to prevent any unwanted things you should format it first

3. yep the option will be given to you on which drive you want to install. C: / D:

4. for this maybe you can use the search function above cos it will be very long to explain 😃

thanks for your replies, but...

1) aren't all mmc cards the same? if not, what is SD?

2) how do i format the card? any utility? or will the 9210i let me do it? how?

There are MMC cards and SD cards, SD card are newer, faster, and have a security option. the're usually a bit thicker than the average MMC card. (a MMC is 1mm, a SD is about 1,5mm/2mm. but for some reason they don't work with the 92xx. Don't let any shop fool you on this part, SD won't work!
