Bluetooth is flaky

I am having some problems with initiating Bluetooth connections.

As far as I can see the only way to initiate the connection is to use the Phone Connection Link software in the system tray; this has two problems.

Firstly, when I click on the icon I get a window which includes COM5 to COM15 bluetooth connections (I've only got one AFAIK). I worked out that two (COM6 and COM8) appear to do something sometimes. Yesterday both worked at the same time. Today only one or the other works, but at the moment COM6 does nothing and when I tick the COM8 connoection it just sits there saying Connecting but doesn't. In Windows Explorer My P800 is not connected and surfing the net uses GPRS not the mrouter connection.

Secondly, I'd rather not have to do anything manually at all.

What I really want is for the connection to start when the P800 is within range. If this is not possible, I'd at least like to know how to start the connection reliably.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I need to do? What are other people's experiences - is bluetooth reliable?

If it's relevant, I am using an Epox USB bluetooth dongle on my desktop machine.

I have tried several times to search the forum for answers, so if I've missed anything at least I did try.

You cannot have this automatically connect when you are within range. IT just doenst allow this.

The new version of the mrouter 1.3.1 is abit buggy, ever since I have installed it I now have to sometimes pull & put my phone back and have it reconnect when I am using the cradle.

To have it connect to blue tooth you have to attemp to make serial connection from your PC to the phone. I say attemp since it will not technically give you an error after attempting, but, this will allow mrouter to connect with you P800 😊 Hope this helps, for more info please use the search function, there has been a lot of threads about this already.

from my experience, both the PC and the phone has to be on "discoverable" mode. I was also hoping to have auto-connection whenever the P800 is within range (just IR). Unfortuntely, it has to be initiated always from the PC side (for my case).

I'm using a Xircom bluetooth card in a laptop running Windows XP Pro. I don't have any problems establishing a stable Bluetooh connection automatically. The laptop and phone connect as soon as I walk in the room.

what exactly is the model name/number of your BT card? Perhaps for pcmcia cards (or pci cards for PCs), there are more features as compared to the USB adapter/dongle (which is I guess cheaper).

Are there any other bluetooth USB adepter/dongle users out there that has auto-connect enabled/working?

Please tell us your BT's brand, model, and price.

Thanks.

Nope I dont have it working that way either, i have to do it Manually..

At least it's not just me.

Is this perhaps an OS issue? If it works with XP automagically but not Win2K it could be that or the hardware (I am using a cheap dongle).

The other problem I have (which I suspect isn't soluble) the the range. I know BT is supposed to have a range of 10M but it's more like 3M. Would a card (which presumably has an aerial and better reception) rather than a dongle help?

I am using the BT usb dongle in an XP and in an W2K, both do not have auto-connect enabled. Yeah maybe we're just using cheap BTs 😃

What is the diferance between ON and AUTO as for the connection between the phone and the wireless headset?

I also have to initiate the connection manually from the PC to connect to my p800. I have bluetooth dongles on my desktop pc and laptop and if I want to connect them I also have to do it manually from the laptop by selecting, settings, network access, desktop pc. The desktop pc is set up as the server and I use its broadband connection to connect my laptop and p800 to the internet.

I have done it this way using 2 bluetooth dongles because it was by far the cheapest option only 27 each. What would be the advantage of using a bluetooth router, which are much more expensive.

Cheers

I know this is not strictly on topic for this thread, but thought I would share it. I've had no trouble setting up Bluetooth pairing between a Nokia 3650 and my P800, and exchanging documents (you have to be somewhat ingenious working out which apps and where on the 3650 support what kinds of thing, e.g. simple text messages by Bluetooth are in Extras --> Notes). The most fun thing was taking a short video on the 3650 (stored as .3gp) and sending via Bluetooth to P800, which played it no trouble in PacketVideo (installed by default) - now there's interoperability. Oddly, even on the 3650 my video clip seemed to have no sound - more digging to do, I guess :fadein:
