Apologies if this has been covered before.
I just got a p800 and very unimpressed with the internal browser. I have downloaded Opera and have it installed on the phone but cannot get it to work. A note at the bottom of the Opera info on the Sony/Ericsson web page says something about Opera not working if conected to a WAP gateway and to set up an access point directly to the internet.
This confuses me. My phone service company sent me emails for auto configuration. The only way I can see to connect directly to my ISP is through dialup. How can I make this work with GPRS?
It also mentions that the settings should be the same as the email client, which also doesn't work.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Martin
Depending on your service provider, you should have several settings on your Control Panel - Connections tab, for example:
Vodafone GPRS MMS
Vodafone GPRS WAP
Vodafone GPRS WEB
Vodafone GSM WAP etc
Set your preferred one to the GPRS WEB option and Opera should start to work.
I actually use a GSM dialup for email, since I travel to lots of places that don't have GPRS (or the HCSD equivalent in the US), but still want my email polled and I can't be @rsed to change my settings each time I get on a plane.
If anyone has figured out how to get email to read
before sending to enable SMTP I would be interested.
I had this problem too. You CAN'T USE WAP GATEWAY ! I don't know your provider, but my provider is t-mobile. For example, my adress to connect to the internet was wap.t-mobile.cz and it worked with internal browser, but not with opera. Now I chaned it into internet.t-mobile.cz and it works well. But all depends on your provider's adress. You should ask for another gateway, not WAP.
Make sure your service provider has set up your account correctly. My brother and I both bought P800's on vodafone with singlepoint as the service provider. I contacted singlepoint and asked them to set the account up for gprs they did so and all worked fine for me. My brother had endless problems with singlepoint configuring his account properly. He did the same as me asked them to set the account up for gprs, but they only set his up for gprs wap not internet. We must have phoned them a dozen times trying to sort this problem out, one guy even said ah yes I see the problem you only have gprs wap activated not internet, I will arrange that, it will be on by tomorrow. Guess what is wasn't
In the end we went into the store and asked them to phone singlepoint and sort it out. We were there 2 hours, they even ported the account to another simcard, but that didn't work. Then the guy in the store managed to actually speak to someone who knew what he was doing and he said the account has not been set up for gprs internet, it is only set up for wap. Within about 5 mins he had sorted it.
So to sort this out took about 2 weeks, a dozen phonecalls and a 2 hour wait in our local phones4U store. All because people do not know how to do thier jobs properly. As was proven this was a problem that could be fixed in 5 mins by someone who actually knew what they were doing.
Rant over
A problem only too common in the "I.T. Industry".
One of the reasons I spend so much time in bars is because in the office I have to work with these people
Strangely my Vodafone stuff (I go direct) worked first time and very well, although they were not at all obvious about how you would go about setting up email if you have your own POP servers.
Basically, Martin, check that you have a GPRS Web or "Internet" account set up in Internet Accounts, and if not, then give your Cellphone company hell.
😃
You would think the service providers will fall over their feet trying to give you the correct settings for GPRS and WAP - because once you start browsing with Opera, you can't stop. Yes, it's that good.
*I'm too scared to login to 'my Vodafone' and see what my phone bill is for this month!!!
The good thing is that gprs on vodafone is free until June. I certainly wont be using it as much after thet point.

Hi, How do you use GSM dial-up? I'm in Bombay and our GSM service provider doesn't seem to have implemented an Internet gateway yet, i.e. they only provide a WAP gateway. Is GSM dial-up a dial-up Internet service provided by the Network Operator? If so, does one end up paying for an international call+roaming if you use that service from another country?
Please excuse if the questions are basic, I'm still getting to grips with my P800.
Thanks

Sort of, in simplest case, you just use the "Internet Connections" entry in Control Panel/Connections and set up a new dial-up to a service provider of your choice; the P800 will support both Analogue or V.20 and PPP ISDN connections. You can then use this connection as your "Preferred" service in both Internet (for use with Opera) and individually in email connections.
However, if you travel abroad, then you will pay for the call, and many countries (such as Russia, China, baltics or indeed anywhere much outside Europe) do not always support a data-quality connection over a ROAMed GSM.
In this case, look at Gric, they let you dial a local ISP in each country, and then handle the back-connection internally. This tends to much more reliable and cheaper if you travel a lot. I just set up one Internet GSM account for each country I go to a lot, then switch manually when I arrive there.
