Backing up Contacts

Does anyone know why I can save my Calender to a new file, and then if I wish, import that saved Calender file back into Calender seamlessly - but it's impossible to do this from the menu in Contacts? Instead I have to mess about like crazy. This seems crazy to me. I can't even save to a common format like CSV...what what all that hype about SyncML?

What exactly does the backup to MMC backup and not backup?

How come it's not possible to edit my Contacts on the Nokia PC suite? Instead i have to use Microsoft Outlook. It makes me wonder what PC connectivity will be like in future Nokia smartphones? What do people think about these things?

hi, i don't know if i got what you mean...

well to backup calendar -- go to file \ more options \ New Database -- create a new one (like "backup"😉. then select all contacts, then shift+ctrl+c to copy all to your new database.

hope this helps. User posted image

Hi
Yeah, sorry - not the best explaination! Basically, I'm just wondering why Contacts feels so 'locked in', it should be made easier to export all your contacts in the Contacts program to a file, preferably a standard file format like CSV - a file which can be opened up from within contacts program menu, or a program on a desktop PC too.

The set up in Calender for importing and exporting s much more flexable than Contacts because it's easy to import from the menu from any location.

It's like, your supposed to either keep your contacts on the 9210 and sync them with Microsoft Outlook on your PC. I don't want to use Outlook.

Home come EPOC ER5 could save ALL contacts to CSV, not just individual contacts?

yah you're right -- the csv format will be a nice backup to the calendar files.

anyway, from time to time, i just save my calendar to another filename on the mmc just to have a secondary copy. User posted image

to mooky -- sorry for messing up the "calendar" and "contacts".. i mean the above was on "contacts"...

anyway, i do the same to both -- a secondary contact database for "contacts" and a backup calendar file on MMC for "calendar"

good day!

I got what you meant User posted image I do the same. It works ok.

I guess it's a sign that the 9210 is a corporate tool, and it's only really designed to be 'configured' by an 'Administrator', rather than the user.

I'm very interested in this one. I've not used a 9210 in anger, and so don't know that much, but from the discussion it appears that you can't handle files in the same way as a Psion5mx.
On my psion I copy my contacts.db and agenda files to my CF card and there you go - backup done. I take it you simply can't do anything like this on the 9210.
Very interesting. A bit too restrictive for me, I feel.

Yup User posted image I know - I had a Psion S7 before the Nokia 9210 - there are some things the 9210 Communicator can't do - which ER5 can - like save simple text files from Word (instead the 9210 saves to Microsoft Word Doc) - but why not TXT too?...I have a hunch this has been rectified in the 9210i for some reason, but I might be wrong.)

One of the features I loved with the S7 was the confidence of knowing i could save all my Contacts to a single CSV file - that way I allways knew if I messed up my ER5 and reinstalled everything from scratch or my Psion got busted I could still use my saved-to-CSV contacts either on a PC (by simply importing the CSV file into Outlook Express (or back into EPOC Contacts). But with the 9210 I've got to have Microsoft Outlook installed on my Notebook (which I'm not keen on) and keep the two in sync. Say, if my Nokia gets smashed - even if I've backup up my stuff to the PC (which is painfully slow) the back-up files are no use if I don't have a 9210 to reinstall them onto! I just find it crazy you can't save Contacts to a file - even M$ allow for flexible 'save as' of contacts, in Outlook!

Arrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhh!

Don't get me wrong the 9210 is a great tool - but it's really annoying that it's so targeted at the corporate market.

Oh - I forgot there is a backup proceedure which backs up to the MMC on the 9210, but sometimes it refuses to copy the contacts file over for some reason. I guess a reset would solve this one tho - but hey...why should we have to bother with that?
