A developer is writing an Ogg format player (which may also play MP3) - http://www.o000o.org/projects/symbian/audiomagic/index.php - Should be available soon on Handango. Looks to be far superior to the standard player, and Ogg format files are substantially smaller than Mp3.

But the only solution is to get a bigger card, however you'll probably have to wait - both 64MB and 128MB are in short supply and high demand (at least in the UK) - I cannot get my hands on either until end of April.

normal mp3z are 128 kbps, 44KHz, Stereo ... for a like "CD" quality. that's about 1MB per min ... and that means no more than 3-4 per 16MB stick ...

what you can do it try encoding them at 64kbps .. it wil cut the size into half ... then try "Mono" ....again reduce the size by half ...

see with which quality you can live with.

One more thing you can do it to encode mp3z as "VBR". that will ensure CD like quality ... at the same time cutting down the size by half ...
