There is an new toy for the 9210(i).
Its called GPS module.
Just would like to know what the difference is between the module from Nokia, http//www.nokia.com/phones/9210i/popups/lam-1.html , and the module from www.exportech.co.uk .
GPS
Hi, I am really interested in that GPS mount system, but I guess if there's some software for nautical use available, such as navigation maps, coastline, etc...
If someone knows something about it, I'll be thankfull if you help me to find it.
Sagema
I find it rather strange that there is only one person who is interrested.
I know i am.
It seems to me this is a great supplement for the 9210.
Over here in Holland its for sale for 399.99 Euro's and it comes with TomTom citymaps and the new TomTom routeplanner, external antenna etc etc.
For now I am waiting for more information.
I got a PDF file from Nokia with some information, if someone is interrested i can upload it somewhere so it is available for you to download.
I would be interested if it was not for the fact that I already have a handheld gps unit. For this unit I build a re-radiating antenna that can take an external antenna and I communicate with this gps using software that I'm busy with on the 9210 emulator.
Chris
Oh yeas, at last we've got it a GPS for Nokia. I awaited it quite ardently and I'll be thankfull for uploading the Nokia PDF file on it. I'm going to Finnland in a couple of weeks and maybe I buy it there for here in Germany it isn't available yet.
Just a problem with me (maybe because I have the oldest model of 9210) I cannot start any TomTom apps on my Nokia. Would the GPS Unit function also without TomTom?
I think your problems with TomTom are not being cosed by your 9210.
Its more likely you have the wrong version off the program.
As far as I know every 9210 should be able to run this program.(if you have the version for the 9210)
I uploaded the PDF File to http//groups.yahoo.com/group/Nokia9210_Belgie/ .
At the left off your screen is a link called; Files.
Here you can find it.
It could be possible that you have to become a member off these group, but its free, so that should not be a problem.
As a normal user of the GPS/SMS application on my former 9110, I have to admit that I've been waiting for a LONG time to see Nokia on that road The GPS option. Now, if they know how to merchandise it, could be a great success...to have in a 9210 the definitely all-in-one!!
But I'm still waiting for someone who has found nautical software for it... ![]()
I have been writing a gps program in OPL that uses my old gps unit. I hit a bit of a wall at the moment so if anyone else is trying let me know. ![]()

I'm busy writing software for my external gps. I'm using C++ and not OPL. So far it is working fine. What is causing your problems?
Chris
Well the first thing that I tried to do was read from the serial port. I can read data from another computer using hyper terminal which all works fine. I made several null modem cables which I know work because they work with the psion 5 and the gps. I know its all wired up correctly, I checked on an silly-scope at work.
I even tried the terminal program for the 9210. This works when connecting the 9210 to the laptop ok but not the 9210 to the GPS. ( The GPS does work OK with the laptop by the way). Not even a single character. My null modem cable is just 3 wires. Pin 2 to 3, pin 3 to 2 and pin 5 to 5 for the signal ground. Its probably some thing really simple but I cant put my finger on it.
It seems to me noboby knows the difference between the two modules...

does it work properly in a car?
is it a good navi system?
OK, well here goes with what I know - or rather what the guys at Exportech told me when I enquired about availability of the GPS unit they are featuring in the website.
"The 9210 GPS is proving to be a nightmare: basically the manufacturer
told us to go ahead and put it on our web site in May/June, as we were
told it would soon be out: then we enquired about which s/w would be
bundled with it: we were told that the manufacturere was "talking to
TomTom" in order to develop a driver specifically for the 9210 GPS.
Having emailed the manufacturer, the distributor, Tomtom, etc etc
yougetthepicture...we are still waiting for a reply.
I am sure the product is technically excellent, but for some mysterious
reason no-one will commit to anything on what is happening - its almost
as though someone is being paid NOT to bring the product out.
Meanwhile we are accumulating orders, enquiries and export orders for
this unit: at present we have orders for over 300 units, but can do
nothing.
The rumour is that Nokia are bringing out their own product soon, if
this is the case, we will almost certainly switch our customers to this
unit."
So there you have it, from the horses mouth as it were.
I can't tell you the differences between this unit and the official Nokia one, but they are different, that's for sure...
All the best
GPS is cool... but from what i can see there are no maps for South Africa sniff sniff!
I totally agree with you, sagema! I managed to use my 9110 with GPS (topographical, nautical use), but it seems that neither firm can guarantee when the device will be on the market, what will be the software (apart from TomTom), and its price. Sometimes I wonder whether Nokia does want to support 92xx - I am referring to all these oddities with 9210, 9210i, 9290 / with or without keyboard future models etc. Nevertheless, we all 9xx0 customers contributed to Nokia's financial success and honored them with our trust...
