P800 Clean Up Procedure

17 replies · 5,427 views · Started 21 April 2003

I planned to do this when the 128 duo arrives but decided to do this earlier since my phone became buggy after a vacation trip during HolyWeek.

Clean Up Procedure:

1.) Backup the phone.

2.) Do a Master Reset.

3.) Syncronize Data with Outlook(Using Outlook overrides phone)
(Will this also return the folders I have made or will I have to categorize all the contacts again? If not, is there a way to restore just my contacts backup above and not all the others?)

4.) Make Folders(Mp3 folder, Message tone folder, Ringtone folder, Contact Pics folder, Pics folder) then copy Pics and Tones back in them.

5.) Configure GPRS(Wap)

6.) Configure GPRS(internet)

7.) Configure MMS.

8.) Configure Emails.

9.) Install:
-Handy Day
-Handy Safe (After installing syncronize with HandSafe Desktop)
-Handy Expense
-12PLanet IM
-Opera
-Screen Capture
-MobiPocket Reader.
-FileManager
-Switcher
-WorldMate
-Built in Viewer.
-Some Games.
-Contacts Control(Cool ap but takes too long, may not install this, still thinking)

10.) Backup Then Use.

The next time I get a breakdown All i will have to do is restore this and then sync my contacts & HandySafe for updates.

Please help me with number two guys, I wont do this unless I solver number two. I have around 800 contacts 😞 Dont want to categorize all of them again 😞

Well, I think we need to help you with number three, right 😉 .
Anyway, when you make a backup, all your contacts are backup-ed as well. So what's the problem? Are you sure he just won't backup your categories as well?

Step 1 backup - I did this myself before i upgraded to the new firmware. R2D. But i also synched my contacts to WAB (Windows Address Book).

Step 2 Master Reset- This i did not do, since the firmware upgrade deletes everything in your phone. But the memory stick contents remained intact. That is my problem. What if i installed a program on my memory stick? Then those files are still there. I won't be able to uninstall it anymore since it's not in the list of applications on the phone anymore. I don't want to restore my backup since i was afraid of the said loss of functionality after restoring to a firmware upgraded phone.

Anyway, all i did was to synch the WAB back to my phone as what you did on step 3, although what you did was synch from Outlook. Which might restore the categories. My WAB synch did not restore my categories.

I have my contacts back, and i will just install all other programs subsequently. I guess i can live without my previous SMS & MMS messages. Internet settings & e-mail settings are easy to setup. Although our Network Provider has blocked our free e-mail retrieval (bummer).

I guess i would have to wait for a P7,000 128MB Duo to be available to have more space.

I read from other threads that syncing with outlook wont restore categories 😞 Is there away to restore backup for the address book only?

Yes, Globe has gone CooCoo lately, I cant check email anymore, I cant even use the MSN messanger by 12 monkey anymore 😞 ANother problem is sometimes it takes so long to send MMS and I get a lot of errors 😞 I tried sending an MMS to someone one time, he was right beside me, when I sent the tones via mms, I got an error that it failed to send, but still the friend of mine got it, weird.

What i did for the contacts was this. SYNCH my CONTACTS only. I think there were 5 items you could synch. Messages, Calendar, Tasks, & one more item. Anyway, CONTACTS was the only item i placed a checkmark on. Set the settings where the phone overwrites WAB data.

After my firmware upgrade, i went back to SYNCH and this time, i chose the setting where the WAB overwrites phone data. My phone data was empty anyway after the upgrade.

That's how i restored my CONTACTS only.

And another thing, the free MMS i told you about is down. Sadly, that is the status lately. So i guess if we have important MMS, we'd have to rely on Globe's.

Cool. I was thinking of restoring contacts only using the backup and restore program that came with our phone, is there a way to restore contacts only using that bec im sure I will be able to restore the folders of my conctacts too if I do it this way. 😊

Were you able to restore the folders/categories using your procedure?

Seems like an awful lot of work for a relatively small amount of housekeeping? What are you actually trying to acheive here, and is it actually necessary?

OK, on a PC you periodically trash the HDD and start again because MS has made such a pigs ear of their OS -- you would never do such a thing on Unix or VMS or, in fact, any proper operating system unless your disk arrays went down. :-?

Often just using a well selected tool to prune out junk will simply free up the space you might need, and because Symbian is not particularly insidious about hiding DLLs you can be fairly sure that you have gotten most things sorted.

I carefully refrain from making any jokes about 'Filipino cleaners' being the best in the world... 😃

Well Ive been getting errors lately after every backup. I get an Appserv error. I cant solve nor traced where its from. Thats why I want to clean up. And I will take your last comment as a compliment 😊 Thanks! Its nice to know our OCW's are doing their Job neatly, reflects on our personality 😊

I think i have finally found a solution. I have read a thread about contacts here:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9298&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30

And here is a recollection of data from that thread which will sort of restore our contacts database with the folders:
1.)

To fix your contact's:

Backup internal drive C:

Rename the backup file to *.zip

Then UNZIP the file to a dir..

Replace the contact.cdb With last working backup. put it in system\data dir on internal.

zip the file exacly like it was and restore the internal drive.

Volla, the phone is back up. Just remember to backup the phone when ever you do changes in your Contacts.

2.)

When i rezip the file i used the standar settings in winzip. I also used the newes version just downloaded.

You backup/restore program do not accsept the file after you zip it.. That is if you try to import it. This is why it's so important to use the same name, or you will not sucess.

Also i had to reset the phone to sucsess. With out reset i got backup failure msg.

backed up internal drive c: unzipped the backup, then i replaced the file contact, zipped it back exaclty as it was.. This is also WERY important so the file gets exepted.

Then after reset of phone i restored it. Didnt loose anything but voise control. All sent sms mms email etc intact.

Tom

Now with those two heres what I plan to do:
Clean Up Procedure:

1.) Backup the phone and make a double backup(for editing the contacts alone.)

2.) Do a Master Reset or upgrade the firmware of your phone.

3.) Make Folders(Mp3 folder, Message tone folder, Ringtone folder, Contact Pics folder, Pics folder) then copy Pics and Tones back in them.

4.) Configure GPRS(Wap)

5.) Configure GPRS(internet)

6.) Configure MMS.

7.) Configure Emails.

8.) Install:
-Handy Day
-Handy Safe (After installing syncronize with HandSafe Desktop)
-Handy Expense
-12PLanet IM
-Opera
-Screen Capture
-MobiPocket Reader.
-FileManager
-Switcher
-WorldMate
-Built in Viewer.
-Some Games.
-Contacts Control(Cool ap but takes too long, may not install this, still thinking)

9.) Backup Up evything again.

10.) Make a copy of the backup in number 9.

11.) Get the second backup you made on number 1, change it to *.zip, then UNZIP the file to a dir, copy the contact.cdb.

12.) Get the second backup you made on number 10, change it the extension to *.zip .Then UNZIP the file to a dir.. replace or paste the contact.cdb that we got from number 12. put it in system\data dir on internal. zip the file exacly like it was and restore the internal drive.

13.) zip the file exacly like it was

14.) Rename it back to *.ecs

16.) Restore this backup and there you go!

Thans to TOM for all of this. I have yet to try this procedure. Always make sure to have a backup of everything. As you can see I made extra backups so I can always restore to any of those just incase this proceure wont work. So Far contacts is my only problem since the categories wont be restored by using OUTLOOK thats why this clean up procedure was geared towards restoring the contacts.

I will be trying this procedur when I get my 128mb, hopefully by today or tom since the shipping date started on April 15.. today is the 8th day and Christomas got it within 8 days 😊

No CONTACT categories restored. Just the numbers, addresses, n stuff.

@Christomas- i upgraded to R2D last Black Saturday at SM West's Cyberzone. There is a SE showroom there & they'll upgrade your firmware within 1 hours

Thats the part I wouldnt want to go through, the categries, imagine 800 contacts 😞

Still can't make this to work. Maybe because i'm using Ultimate Zip. I'll try to do it on WinZip or something.

Hey guys... Stupid Question #104 in a series of 2000

Where do you get the backup utility, I can't find it from the SE CDs

Cheers

If you successfully installed PC Suite (and that is an if), then it should be in your Start Menu, or on the context menu for the phone icon in your system tray.
