After a lot of effort, I've finally managed to install PC Suite 1.4.2 - so I thought I'd share my results with you.
Up to now, every time I've tried to install 1.4.2 (or 1.3.1) it's told me that another program is part way through installation / uninstallation and that I need to reboot and try again. Nothing seemed to help, including uninstalling 1.1.1, reinstalledin 1.1.1. etc.
SE Ericsson support were no help at all and told me that "The problem must be with your PC, because we've tested the software on your OS."
Following a tip in another forum, I did the following.
- Download the Statup Control Panel from http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml and run it.
- Disable all the items in "Startup(User)", "Startup(Common), "HKLM(Run)".
- Reboot.
- Install 1.4.2 (in my case on top of 1.1.1).
- Run Startup Control Panel again, renable all the items, delete one of the duplicate entries for each of "Syncronisation Manager" and "Phone Connection Manager".
- Reboot.
And it all just worked!
Hope this helps someone. YMMV.
Many thanks for the solution.
I spend 2 weekends just to install 1.4.2 but failed. Finally I giveup and used back 1.1.0. At one stage I am thinking of reformat and re-install the OS.
Luckily I have not done so.
Thank You! Thank You!! Thank You!!! You made my whole week!!!!

I had this incredibly frustrating problem with both the recent versions and gave up, went back to the original on the CD. It's a real shame that SE developers think testing in a controlled environment serves any purpose. I'm very grateful for the solution it worked for me too, many thanks.

You think they test this stuff?
😃
mcfmcf,
I must thank you, for weeks i've been trying to install this pc suite, without any luck. I totally gave up and thought I will just have to do with the pc suite 1.1.0 until I read your message.
Thanks a million!!!!!!
SE Ericsson support were no help at all and told me that "The problem must be with your PC, because we've tested the software on your OS."
That's nothing... One of their support engineers actually me "I give up." hahaha I called Dell support (because that's who manufactured my comp) and even though their guy never even heard of the P800 he had an idea that got mine working in about an hour. lol, if it was any sadder I'd cry.
Correct me if Im wrond but i think the only difference between 1.3.1 and 1.4 is that 1.4 supports wind98. So why not use 1.3.1 if you already have winxp you dont need to upgrade yet.
Many thanks for the posts here. I found that on my Sony laptop the only thing that worked was booting in safe mode and installing PC Suite 1.4.2 from there.
In my case I have had both Palm and Pocket PC as well as using w2k's own file sync so I imagine it's a conflict with one of those programs.
I had already tried the previous workaround in this thread - it didn't work for me but its a great little application!
/p
Thanks - this worked for me.
To be fair to SE data support - they were fairly persistent at trying to get a solution for me (requesting registry for them to replicate problem etc.) - they haven't come to any solution yet - I will pass this link on to them. 😃
